This also begs the question: You buy a second-hand motorhome from a dealer that has had 'a full service', and the said motorhome was, say, 5 years old and no mention of cambelt change in the service history. I would suggest that if the belt breaks within the next four years because it had not been changed the dealer would be liable for the full cost of repair.
Tried that when we bought our Rapido last month - dealer said cam belt is not included in the full service given before we picked it up. I am a worrier and the motorhome was 5 years old but only 12,000 on the clock so asked dealer to replace cam belt plus an air conditioning belt? We agreed a cost price tho as otherwise would of been ÂŁ500. Worth it for piece if mind tho as find enough to worry about without waiting for the engine to blow up!

The local family run garage (whom we trust) reckons every 5 years for any vehicle. Most MHs will never get close to the recommended mileage for a cam belt change.

I'm always wary even if they change the 'belt' as it could have been the time it needed the full kit including idlers ,etc.

Bought last VW van SH, so over 10 year period of ownership it had 3 new timing belts +bits, and new water pumps, at 4 year intervals.

The Fiat 2.3 lump will need doing in 2021. Having read @terryb's post above, better start saving now.

Too late to order a new van with the Fiat 3l engine. I can only dream about chain driven camshafts. :censored::sick:

Good heavens that's expensive, I would find a good independent garage, you would at least half that price straight away.

I'd look at the engine - the belt has a simple cover. A chain has an oil-tight cover.

If it isn't a chain can you change it to one or is it a different set up?

In common with a lot of motorhome matters it partly comes down to your personality, the fact you are asking the question suggests you may be a worrier (obviously I don't know that) and should probably get it changed, the peace of mind it will bring will be worth every penny. If you are the type that reads the reports of all those who have had it done only to be shown what still looks like a brand new cam belt then you may think twice. You may feel that this fits in the same bit of folklore that says change your tyres every 5 years regardless of mileage or wear. Some folk cannot drive their motorhome without the comfort of a spare tyre, others couldn't care less. If peace of mind is important change it at the recommended interval. Don't forget to pay for a brake fluid, cooling fluid, oil flush and fuel line cleaner at the same time.
