Seen a few van now with covers over the wheels. Almost like F1 cars have. What's the idea with these on a camper?

Really the sun can damage tyres that much amazed. So how come people dont use them on cars?

I have a pair I use when we're stopped for a while in sunny climes to protect from the UV. Not worth the effort in UK though.

We use the tarps in the uk to pop across to the bog (ablutions) during the English summer?

Well bit late for us then been in Spain a few months. But will know for next time

I have a car in Spain I always cover the wheels not daily but for long periods otherwise the sun will crack the side wall and it fail the itv, ( Spanish MOT ).

I've lived here for nearly 14 years and have only ever seen foreigners cover their wheels on campsites. Never seen a local do it.

Their cars might be moving daily, some visitors cars sit for month was advised if sat long time cover them up

Ours sit for three to four months here in Spain so I cover them, don’t bother in the uk.

True. But the cars moving daily are in the sun as well!!

It’s standing in one place without movement that does the damage, that’s why tyres should be replaced when seven years old. UV damage accelerates the damage but guess what, If you know better carry.

i Don’t know how to explain it, but when tyres move they leak out a liquid like an oil, which is what keeps them plyable, if stood still this does not happen which is why they dry out and crack. Sure someone will come along and explain better than me.

But tyres when warm through movement are not affected by u v. Have had inner tubes on my cycle come through the sidewalls due to sun damage..I cover them now when parked on site.BUSBY.

Tyres in storage. should be in the dark and covered, prolonged exposure to U-V accelerates Cracking. The ones on my "Classic" are well cracked from standing, and will need to be replaced anyway, once the re-furb is done. When tyres are rotating and flexing the heat apparently warms and distributes the molecular structure in a manner which keeps them supple. It was always said too NOT to cover with any Plastic material?. The best advice used to be to use (say) Sacking material or similar.

I have the same problem on my 'high days and holidays' car here in the UK. Had to replace all 4 tyres after less than 3000 miles due to cracking. My fault I didn't use it enough but I'd def highly recommend covering tyres anywhere with a strong UV presence

Don’t forget the wipers. They are probably even more exposed to uv and heat than the tyres.

Yes your right take your wipers off

Tyres used to be stored wrapped in brown grease proof paper with all the details and brand advertisement printed on it . I know that was many years ago but there was a reason for that .

I know a spanish bloke who owns his own business & who drives his original van. Every night when he parks up he puts wooden wheel covers over all 4.

I throw mine away roughly every month as the sun & mainly the dust destroy them in no time. That's why I stick to the chinese shop ones as the same happens when I've used Bosch so you get nine pairs of chinese ones for the price of a Bosch set.

As an aside plastics are degrad left full, you cannot even pick up.They just disintegrate.

I have wiper covers which I bought for a few quid on ebay but removal is another solution.

I found a simple solution, 15mm Pipe wrap insulation. Split it and fit over the Wipers.? Cheap, effective, and easy to replace, when "lost".
