Another newbie question

On a site at the moment and the van next to us has covers over all four wheels.

But no awning or anything.

What's that all about?

In much the same way that the Victorians used to cover table legs, certain cultures believe that the sight of a naked tyre wall with a prominent valve can inflame women of a certain disposition and age into committing unspeakable acts, thus they cover the tyres to prevent spontaneous hormonal overload.

I think the simple answer is "only the people that do it know why they do it" it could be to stop the driving rain sending the discs rusty:LOL:

The reference by these folk to UV effects upon tyre wear would suggest to me that reducing the effects of UV light by some kind of tyre cover is not a bad idea.

In fairness it seems to reinforce the 5 year limit more than anything else.
I'm sure if you're going to leave something static for ages taking precautions to protect the tyres isn't a bad idea.. but we all have motorhomes and a big chunk of us use them all year around so I can't see how a tyre cover could help at all.

7 years followed by a break of 11 years and then 4+ years but given up now
Probably a good idea to take the weight off the tyres as well - easy with levelling jacks fitted.

In all honesty I probably would never had bothered...but some superstar friends and fellow funsters gave me a set that fit perfectly so how could I possibly not use them...plus as you see they're doing a fine job as the temperature hits 35c :).

I use ours if parked for more than a fortnight or so. (Not very often)
It stops dogs & cats peeing on the tyres which causes more damage than uv. Once one has peed on you every animal that passes will smell it and add their bit!!

They are supposed to reduce the UV effect on tyres left for long periods in the sunshine, but I don't suppose there has ever been any research into this. Nevertheless I got a pair (which go on the sunny side) in Morocco and use them whenever we're parked up in the sunshine for more than a couple of days - my choice.

Like @Dazzlin reason better though!

I know a spaniard that runs a company & insists on all his workers covering the van tyres when they park. He drives himself the oldest van & when I look from the motorway to his place & the van is there it always has his home made wooden tyre covers on all 4 wheels.
I always keep covered the tyres on my trailer or the car if I go away.It is quite common around here especially if you have no shaded area to park in.
