Considering a van with 70,000 on the clock.
What would you think?
What is considered high?

It depends.......
What van,base vehicle,engine,service history........
Some Merc sprinters go for 300000 miles.
70000 is nothing if it's been looked after, with regular servicing.

Last year we traded in our previous van we'd had for 5 years from new and with 28,000 miles on the clock.

And the dealer said, "Oh you've done a high mileage"

Couldn't quite believe it, but guess he would say that... ;)

But seriously, if the 70,000 mile van isn't too old, has a full service history and appears to be in good condition it shouldn't be a problem. However, one proviso - once you've put a good few thousand more miles on the clock, the market for selling it could be more limited. So the price you pay should reflect the relatively high (for a motorhome) mileage.

The mileage is not a important as the general condition IMV.
All base vehicles should be good for 200k miles easily if serviced and looked after properly.
Good service history and that genuine looked after appeal is what I would like to see.

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
It would help to know which make/model of 'van' (Trabant, Mercedes, ex Dell Boy's Reliant? Petrol, diesel?) and its past life. What year is it? Or is it a motorhome?
If it has been a stop/start 'white van man delivery hack' thrashed by all sorts of maniacs trying to earn bonus it could be iffy. And, e.g. they often park two wheels up the kerb so tyres, suspension and steering could be 'knackered' (techy term).
Generally though, if it's a diesel it's barely run in and should be fine, just as long as it has been serviced as necessary.
My one previous owner VW T4 based diesel m/h is 16 yrs old with 75,000 on the clock and it runs sweet as a nut, uses virtually no oil and has been faultless for the past 6 years and 25k miles.

If it's a diesel base on white van man's milage good for 200 thousand so 70 is fine has it been regularly serviced would be my interest

We have had (and I was a big Sprinter van fan).......

2001 Mercedes Sprinter, Eura Mobil 3 years old with 8,000 miles on the clock. The Sprintshift gearbox was a nightmare. No dealer could fix it. Cost me a lot of money but the 5 cylinder 2.7 engine is almost bullet proof.

2007 Mercedes Sprinter V6 3.0 Manual Frankia 17 months old, 17,000miles on the clock. in 4 years, it cost us almost £10,000 in Mercedes Dealer repairs. The V6 Engine is a bugger if the Heater plugs fail and snap, especially on an A Class.

2013 Mercedes Sprinter V6 3 Litre Auto, Brand New La Strada. Not the best, but when new was lovely to drive.

2001 Fiat, 115,000 kM, now 125,000 kM. So-far, trouble free. Sailed through its MOT unlike.......

My 2007 Mercedes Sprinter 2.1 Auto Traveliner, 90,000 miles. Had no end of trouble in the last 20,000 miles.

I would want the price to reflect the "high" mileage. Find comparison models, mileage and prices as ammunition to chip the price down. The vehicle should be fine with those miles on it without doubt but it is higher than the norm.

The "van" part is capable of high miles, surely its the Motorhome part that you need to worry about. From all the stories on here and elsewhere the most trouble comes from the leaking bodies and faulty build quality. Vans are vans and the world over can be fixed. I'd be more interested in how much use the habitation bit has been used and treated.

If you are considering a private used van purchase what is the best way to get it checked over? Not much of a clue ourselves...

The other consideration is what you are likely to add to it. I try to use mine regularly and we have one 6 week holiday touring the UK each year as well. 3500 miles is around my average for a year. So if l keep it 5 years I'm going to add around 20k to it. Not much really.

Forgot to mention that, as others have posted, we got our van at a really good price too. The salesman did mention that the mileage had put most people off.

I'd rather have a ten year old van with 50000 miles than a ten year old van with 5000 miles, vehicles that sit around doing nothing develop more issues than ones that are used.
Often high miles is a testament to reliability.
If it has been well serviced and has a good Mot history of repairs being done in good time etc
With motorhomes you sometimes find low miles but very well worn interiors usually due to people using every weekend etc but only travelling short distances.
Higher miles usually indicates they have travelled further afield so longer runs on the engine.
But every story is different, the overall presentation of the vehicle in question and a good Mot history would be my main points

The mileage wouldn't put me off but the thought of the resale value and difficulty finding a buyer with a lot of people thinking 30k miles is a lot would. The price has to be right. I would try and get an idea of trade in value first (make up a near mileage and near model and phone a dealer or phone the we buy motorhomes ad in the back of MMM) this will be lower than a private sale so add a bit say 20%. I suspect the van will be at least 25% less than a lower mileage one to get it sold.

9 years old with 60k, that is only 6,700 miles a year that is low mileage for an A Class, average is normally around 10,000.
I had a similar thought after the last post I made and my guess on valuations could be out but still worth looking at the ads to see if prices are affected it doesn't matter if its high it matters if buyers think it is!!

More so in the UK than mainland Europe. UK Salesmen & buyers appear to love low mileage vans that have stood around most of their life doing untold damamge.
Heard yesterday of a 3 year old Carthago up for sale that had only done 2000 miles, not something I would want to take a risk on, at the very least it would have square tyres.

We got either the AA or RAC to give ours a prepurchase check, which I think cost about £200 four years ago. Or get a reliable garage to check it over? It's probably worth getting a habitation check done too. It means spending out before buying but probably still cheaper than getting the equivalent van through a dealer.

Good luck.

Blimey!
With all this talk of low resale prices I had better slow down a bit.
Done 30,000 miles in 30 months.

At least there aren't many cobwebs hanging off the van. :D

Early in the year I was thinking of downsizing and got talking to a Motorhome salesman, he was honest enough and told me the price difference between high mileage vehicles and low was actually only £1000 and to prove it he showed me Glasses book of Motorhome prices, yes there is one. I was quite surprised by it
