Doing the odd bit of getting rid of the surface rust on and need to treat it before painting the van bits.Have used various methods before but always came back again.Anyone had any success ?

I've used a few but the best one (IMHO) is stuff called Fertan. There are various online retailers and sizes if you do a search. It's non-toxic, water based (in fact it prefers the rust to be damp when applied) and actually smells nice. More importantly, it does seem to stop rust completely.

Any proprietary rust eating solution should do you, just scrape off the main stuff and away you go. I can heartily recommend Wurth, for any fluids, lubricants or tools. Expensive but good, I use nothing else on my m/c's.

worked on my old car.

I've enjoyed good success with Kurust on our steel narrowboat hull. It's a Hammerite product. I've found with all these products you still need to sand/wire-brush off the loose rust first, then paint with a product like Kurust, before painting. Hope this helps.

I've successfully used Vactan on my steel narrowboat , no need to wash off like Fertan . Obviously you need to remove loose rust first .

The greatest requirement is one of patience. Treat assess re-treat dont retreat, use as instructions, some need neutralizing. Products such as fertan can be sprayed up the in side of cills box sections etc before drying out and further use of waxoyl/ dinitrol (insert favoured product) . Assess the direction of tin worm, is it just from the outside or from the other side or the surface you cant see. Example the Bongo wings are double skinned, the other side of the pannel is on the inside (this is a cavity susceptible to condensation. To deal with this: From inside of van treat / spray fertan dry spray waxoyl diluted with 20% white spirit. Now deal with the rust on outside. Some times rust occurs because of build up of leaf detritus in wings or under bonnet, to remove in difficult access areas i use a trombone brush.
Do it well do it every 5 years, rush, do it every 5 minutes .
