We've been campervanning/caravanning/motorhoming since 1994, when we were both still working. We couldn't wait for Friday afternoon to get away for the weekend. I then worked part time, which, when it fit with Martin's shifts, meant we could get away on Wednesday evening for four whole days.

Fast forward to 2023. We "retired" in 1998 and have had many years of wandering. Four years ago, conscious of advancing age, we bought an apartment on a nice golf complex, where people pay good money to have a holiday.

So, why is it, we are tonight, happily esconced in a metal box and looking forward to a few more weeks of the same lifestyle? Just what is the attraction for everyone?

Freedom to stay or go. Two weeks in a holiday complex - No thanks, Two weeks on a campsite - No thanks. The attraction is being able to stay or go depending on how we feel, how much or how little we like where we are. The lure of the open road is intoxicating, the excitement and adventure of driving to new places irresistible.

You are asking the choir about the priest’s sermon!

Whats the attraction? Travel, new experiences, the chance to escape everyday life (and the family responsibilities), waking up somewhere new, silence, new foods, french bread, spanish tapas, Portuguese wines, sun, sand, mountain air, I can’t could go on

I'm an oldbie MH number 9
Please let me know when you find the answer.

I'm sat here in Livigno, been skiing all day, sat in the MH after pizza, vans filthy, I've had a flat tyre and a flat battery on the way down (left stereo on) my vans filthy,
Christmas day I spent the day and week in Brugge, cold and wet everytime I opened the door,

I've spent 100s of thousands of pounds on Motorhomes over nearly 20 years.. and yet still I want more!!
And have no idea why

Partly the freedom to move about, partly the better views of the countryside from the higher seating position and partly an adult version of making forts or hiding-places out of boxes or under tables when I was a kid. I often take a brew out to mine when it's on the drive and sit there reading.

I was just happily, very happily, sitting in our overnight spot. The view isn't as good as our home view, and the noise is ... noisier, but I'm contented.

We have neighbours on our complex. They have a holiday home there and a motorhome that they use from home (UK) to holiday home in Spain. They use the same campsites on the way here, and then on the way back, and wouldn't even think of using the motorhome whilst here. They can't understand us using the motorhome for trips away. And ... as for us not using campsites, with facilities ... don't even go there!

We'll NEVER understand each others viewpoint.

(But ours is the right one 🤣🤣).

Hi.
Waking up in the morning to new vistas, seeing the real world from your cab seat. Over the years,i have seen sights you could never buy,sun rises/sets,moonlit nights etc. Two memorable sights within striking distance of Buxton. One,coming over one winters evening and the sunset making the snow glow pink. 2. Coming past " Tideswell area " the sky full of coloured Hang Gliders.it was as if the sky was full of pretty Butterflys. Thats just two, multiply that by thousands.
The/my windscreens have been the best " Picture frame " i could have ever dreamt of,and i ..........GOT PAID. Result Carried on with the m/ho,double bubble.

Presently in Christchurch New Zealand. Trip was purely to see Son and grandkids. Brief stops at Dubai and Brisbane. Wasn't long after numerous security checks, immigration checks, lugging of luggage on and off buses and trains that wife turned around and said 'give me my motorhome any day'.

Getting better month by month.
Flexibility is our main plus. We were due away yesterday on tunnel for 4 weeks but one of our dogs had to have an emergency operation day before, so we moved to next week. Just found out on post op check today that he is due stitches out next week on the day we are due to go again, so really easy; we moved it again. Try that with airlines, hotels or even campsites. One/ Teo tunnel changes easy.

We love it. We bought Moho on a bit of a whim when I retired. Our first trip was 6 months to France and Spain. We jumped in with both feet. We've stayed in some grotty places and we stayed in places right on the beach or lake that you would never get a hotel. If we like a place we might stay a week but if not there's always somewhere new to find. All the while we have our familiar comfortable surroundings our home from home.

We are odd ones out🙂 the motorhome was bought for music festivals, getting too old to carry all the gear from car parks and sleeping on the floor 🤪but since owning we’ve been bitten by the bug and can’t wait to get away,oh and it’s great to have a big grey box to throw money at!😄😄😄

Agree with all comments about freedom and fun and festivals😄❤️But also days out to places in uk we would never have seen without the Moho- not to mention being able to take grandkids out for days kayaking by river/ picnics/ Nat trust/ legoland weekends with on board loo change of clothes food they would eat etc. Also big bonus that doesn’t affect payload is the fact it is crammed with happy memories

Back motorhoming after a 6ish year break!
It allows us to have many more holidays per year as we are restricted to end/half term holidays. Going away for 2 weeks in the summer on a package holiday would cost us thousands, now we can do 3 weeks at a time in the MH and we'll soon recoup much of the original outlay.

Also, what better gift to give your children than seeing Europe many times off the beaten track?

We love travelling, discovering, and staying at different places. Just to wander, freely, and to stop almost anywhere, for a cuppa and a snack, a toilet break and a freshen up. Also, knowing full well, the facilities are spotlessly clean.
We are never in a rush, never stressed about where we will stay the night, I suppose we are a bit nomadic, but, love it.

When I took the dog back to the vet, it transpired that the dog had taken his stitches out by himself. :Eeek:

All of the above. I have wanted a motorhome ever since as a child a local garage started selling converted commer vans. Had to wait another 20 years before I bought my first one.
An attraction to me is on the social side I can avoid it. Hate hotels and airports as they are full of people, mostly in a bad mood.

At the moment the attraction for me is limited to feeling quite wealthy as since October 21, I've had £100k of my hard earned cash sitting in various safe places that no matter how hard I want to, I can't spend on a motorhome until its built sometime/never. I'm going to rather miss it when it's gone 🤨😁

I think for me it's the flexibility but also I know my bed kitchen etc is clean (not so sure about the outside :giggler: ). The ability to stay or go as the mood takes us - I remember going to Fleurie campsite for the first time intending to only stay over night - stayed 10 days and loved it - couldn't afford to do that in a Hotel.
We are going for an apartment holiday in Aix en Provence soon by train. Very much looking forward to it, but nervous about the connections etc. and can we get good cafe meals en route whose prices we consider reasonable? I know all will be good in the end, but it doesn't have the relaxing aspect of a MH holiday. I spent my career enjoying challenges and getting out of my comfort zone - I don't want it now!

There are some good answers on here, but there is a running theme of "freedom, own things for comfort, and good value, not necessarily money wise" running through this thread.

Keep your answers coming.
