If you don't need the C1 extra weight there is no point, C1 can be reinstated at any time if you pass the medical.
Thanks that's useful as don't require extra weight currently but may want to go for heavier than 3500 kg van sometime in the future.

Apart from the gross train weight restriction, there is a further restriction if a driving test was passed after 1997. I believe this to be 750kg. Of course this does not apply to you.

Just a tad..
C1 and C1+E were given automatically to anyone holding a full licence in 1997, prior to this a full licence holder could drive vehicles up to 7500k MAM.
After this a test had to be taken for vehicles over 3500k, C1 which limits trailer weight to 750k MAM.
Another test needed to be taken to tow larger trailers up to a total train weight of 12000k, grandfather rights holders of C1+E are limited to a max train weight of 8250k as long as these weights are in the towing capacity of the vehicle.

This is my understanding too. C1 pre’97 licence gives 8250kg train weight and any vehicle/trailer combination up to the limit, within the vehicle in questions train weight plating.

Here you are.
I am Eighty
if you have the BE entitledment you are entitled to pull a braked trailer as long as the combined weight of both vehicle and trailer does not exceed the max train weight of the towing vehicle, there should be a plate under the bonnet which will tell you axle weights , gross vehicle weight, and gross train weight.
The confusion arises if you pull a unbraked trailer then the gross weight of the trailer must not exceed 750 kilos

For people passing later, there is an additional maximum trailer weight of 3500kg for B+E. I would imagine this would not apply to the OP, so B+E is unlimited, whilst C1+E is limited to 8250kg. Go figure. It's normally a moot point as almost all B+E trailers are overrun brakes anyway limited to 3500kg and almost no B vehicles can tow over 3500kg.

However, the main exception to this is modified :h:500kg pick-ups that can tow 5th wheel semi-trailer caravans at well over 3500kg. You'd need grandfather rights or a C+E to drive one of these! (C1+E may not be acceptable due to the 8250kg limit, unless it is a "light" 5th wheel trailer). Technically, they ballsed up and such a vehicle is illegal to drive unless you have grandfather rights, but I'm sure they'd accept C+E!

These are the documents you need to Immediately explain to Rozzers or however that your vehicle and trailer is legal.
