Friends of ours use the TrackMyTour app to record their trips but it is only available to use on either an iphone or ipad.

I have both but prefer to use a laptop to download photos and write. Does anyone know of an app or similar that can be used to create a travel-log/travel blog using a laptop?

Before apps were invented and when we had a caravan I recorded our trips in an exercise book. Four books and thirty years later I added a motorhome to our vehicle collection of one caravan and two cars. The motorhome was my office while working away from home on my own, I could not ditch the exercise book system and although stationary in my MH I kept a record of things done to improve it etc.
Before I knew where the years went to technology had overtaken me, 'how do I do that ' was a constant phrase when on my computer and it still is! I haven't given up trying but its the trusty exercise book for me, more like the defunct filo type diary, works for me.

Yes, I too record our travels in a handwritten diary and enjoy doing so. I'll continue to write but I also want to create a blog so that I can share it with friends.

I'm a newbie and always will be. You never know it all.
My Dash cam records all my travels, download daily and then use "Datakam Player" free, but now unsupported, still works well though.

Thanks for the replies.

We don't have a dash cam and I think to use the sat nav would be overly complicated as we don't always use it.

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone use software to create a log of where they've been (on a map) and which also allows the user to download photos and also a written travel blog? It also needs to be compatible with a MacBook Pro.

We were at Suerre about 10 days ago. The old Aire beyond the marina was shut off with barriers, so we parked on the grass at the end of the marina before the slipway, but were moved on by Municipal Police who directed us to the campsite behind the marina. We did not fancy that so used Park4Night to find a quiet 3 car CP by the river at Jallanges - just S. of Suerre on your walking trace.

Where did you stay?

First time we have been moved on in 9 years - seems like attempt to up revenue for the commercial operator of the campsite, but they only had 2 customers

We are in the commercial aire which was the former municipal campsite. Now run by Camping Car Parks and at €11 a night not cheap but we have electricity and are sitting outside at the moment.

As well as recording the day to day report of our trips in our Funster handbook, I can pull up online our route, stops and other info via an app for our tracker which displays in Google maps.
This can also generate a downloadable report.
Here's an example from our Mosel valley trip in August.

That is where the Police directed us.

I object to the tactic of the Municipality that they shut the existing Aire and try to insist one uses a commercial site, for which I presume the Municipality is receiving rent. That is why we moved to Jallanges which had a better view and swans and ducks to feed. We might have eaten out in Suerre, so they lost out all round.

We do not use EHU(except at home) and do not carry a cable anymore so no benefit to us.

I seriously doubt the viability of the business plans of these commercial companies taking over municipal campsites and charging much more, because they are competing with thousands of free or low-cost aires and/or free parking places. I wonder if they have over estimated the number of MHs which actually want facilities as opposed to being self-sufficient.

I suspect if the police were inclined to boost site revenues they would have more incentive when this was a municipal site. It doesn't make sense they only do it now because it is privately owned as you imply. I guess the municipal closed because it was losing money as are other traditional camping sites in France.

You may well be right, but I think the closure of the Aire must be linked to the new commercial operation - maybe a condition in the contract with the Mairie, since it is still there and not used for anything else, just barriered off with temporary movable barriers.

If the commercial site also loses money and closes then the Municipality may have nothing, but that is maybe why they have only put temporary barriers in case they want to re-open.

How many MHs on site this evening?

Anyway enjoy your time there,

Geoff

From comments above am I right in saying that with Mapsource on a PC with an attached GPS receiver I can both navigate and record a route plus add / import my own POIs.
I am desperately trying to find a replacement for the now obsolete Microsoft Autoroute but it must be on a large screen device i.e. a laptop to be able to do old fashioned map reading and navigating.

Mapsource is a (free) stand alone mapping/route creation program from Garmin, it has no GPS funtionality at all... but doesn't need an internet connection to use.

My Garmin 660 Zumo has a built in trip recorder, and when hooked up to my laptop can be saved as a route complete with my owned POI's/favorites I have created, using Mapsource.

I'd like to use google timelines but I can't get it to work. I switched on the necessary settings some months ago but it hasn't logged anywhere we've been despite always having an ipad/phone open when travelling. I've googled the instructions again and followed them but still nothing.

Can you help? I know the explanation above is a bit vague but perhaps I need to enable something else other than just switch the settings to follow me? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Really pleased with it; very intuitive, you can add photos but we mainly use it for a dairy for each day. It has been invaluable when looking back on previous years diary's to recall specific places, campsites etc. Not sure about the routing of a journey but we always take a shot with an iPhone which has a gps facility so when we download shots all info is there including where the shot was taken.

With an Android phone there is a setting called "Location" which needs to be turned and the mode set to " High accuracy ".

I can't help with iOS but is there any similar setting?

Edit: A quick Google suggests there is under Settings/Privacy/Location.

I'm the opposite Geoff. I understand that in this day and age local municipalities need to save money wherever they can, and I'd rather Camping Car Park took over municipal campsites rather than that they closed. I also think they're reasonable value for money, most if not all include water, waste, EHU and fast wifi, and if there were originally showers etc they keep them on. We know if we're heading for one we'll be able to BBQ ouside as well. They're open all year whereas some municipals were summer only. We've also found it useful being able to check online in advance how full a site is, and although we've never done it, you can book a space in advance.

Judging by the occupancy rates we've seen their business model is reasonably successful.

Thanks for info...

I did go to the settings you list when I first tried to activate it. I just can't seem to get it to work. I think I may have to wait till I get home and ask our son if there's something obvious I'm not doing. I hope I can get it to work as it looks just what I want.
