don't own one yet
We are thinking of buying a motorhome. There are just two of us, both mature. We would like a small motorhome with a double bed, cooker and microwave, fridge and toilet (no shower). Because of parking restrictions it cannot be wider than 2.2 metres, and not taller than 2.32 metres, maximum weight 3.5 tons. Any suggestions? jamesrmichael@yahoo.com

Your max height restriction will be a limiting factor to van conversions with or without a pop-top roof. My Ducato conversion, for example, is 2.52 m without the ariel and solar panels on the roof.
On the standard (lowest) roofline, most conversions are on VW or Transit base.

You may need to look at pop-top roofs, due to your low height requirement. The microwave will take up lots of a room in a small camper. They can be found easily enough, but be sure it is worth enough to you for the cost in space.

As base vehicles, you can get up to a VW Transporter T6 medium roof or pop-top, provided you fold the mirrors in. Ford Transit SWB would have to be low roof (thus requiring pop-top). Same with Transit Custom. You'll struggle to get in and out, though, unless the parking restriction widens out a bit after the pinch point.

Anything with "VW" in the model will cost you an extra 30%. Just because. A professional Transporter conversion costs as much as a full blown motorhome, but with a lot less space/shower/toilet cubicle etc. But they still hold their value, as, apparently, everyone wants one!

You can also buy a base vehicle and have it professional converted. A basic conversion would be about £15,000 including the roof.

We have just gone from a VW T6.... I'll be honest, it was a very nice van and we loved it while we had it. Lot's of people swear by the VW's and the only thing that got us in the end was the constant rounds of 'tetris' - moving things back and forth to create space. It was fine for a few days, or even a week away - but much longer than that wouldn't have been great for us.

You don't say what the budget or max length of your vehicle could be? If length is no issue then there is always the LWB VW's

As stated above - you will pay a premium for a VW, but they do hold their value well. If you are thinking of going down that route, I would definitely say hire one for a week before making a final decision - the 'bristolcampercompany' mentioned above does hire them out

Enjoy the process and don't rush it..... better to get something you will really love than to dive in too quickly

Good luck (y)

With your size retrictions you are going to be very limited, a small campervan with a pop up roof is about your only option you won't get an oven or a microwave in those, microwaves are a waste of time in a camper anyway.

Whilst it is slightly limiting, it is a surprisingly common option on a small campervan. I wouldn't go for it myself, as there's little enough storage anyway and it is easy enough to cook on a double hob. However, for some people, popping in a convenience meal is how they plan their limited time away, preferring to spend their time on their main activities, surfing/climbing/paddleboarding/kayaking etc.

That is a perfect summary of why a microwave would be required in a small van. 👍🏻
