Hi All,

Our 2.7 litre Rimor Sailer has a tow bar. So, what is the lightesr used small car for towing, and what kind of towing rig would we need and electrical synching and steering synching? Thanks in advance and apologies if this has been asked elsewhere.

If you have got an image to maintain a smart car. If you want something that does what it says on the tin, a Hyundai i10 is very good.

We are very pleased with our i10. It seats 4 if needed . The boot is small but if getting lots of shopping etc the back seats drop easy.

Road lighting could be either a trailer lighting board, the easiest option, or the cars lighting could be utilised, auto electrician preferred.

Steering takes care of itself, it needs no intervention other than ensuring the steering lock is OFF , its foolproof and can't go wrong.

We have an 1Q it's ideal for the three of us and can get Amanda's walker in the fourth seating area but has no boot. Its very cramped for 4people.
One word of warning whatever you get you will need protection on front end and bonnet from road chips.

I'm sorry to contradict Kate, but we have been towing our toads, braless, for over 10 years and have never had a stone chip ... the problem with a toad bra is that both the car and inside of the cover must be spotlessly clean or the car bonnet will get scratched.

Hi
We tow a 52 plate Golf convertible and agree you have to remind yourself it is there.
Rather than a cover on the front I fixed anti spray skirting right across the back of the MH between the rear wheels and the end of the MH.

We have a VW Move UP, white 4 door on a 62 plate and it also tows really well on a smarttow unit. Has self braking so very easy. Look on their web site which shows the unit.
Just changing our motorhome end of this month and not bothering with a tow bar so we may sell the car as it has had the towing facility installed. I think 32k miles on the clock. If you were interested not sure how much without a bit of research but around £7,000 maybe?

We have towed a Fiat Panda and a VW Polo on a Towbars2towcars rig and haven't had any problems.

I tow a VW Up, very well behaved, dont even notice it is there most of the time. Previously towed a Smart but it could suffer from severe wheel wobble if it clipped a pothole or mini roundabout on a slow tight turn, not something everyone complains of.

I use a Towing-A-Frames frame. Very much lighter than the back wrenching Car A Tow one I used previously (which is still in my garage in Poole if anyone wants to discuss relocating it on very reasonable terms). A less arthritic operator than I would probably not struggle with a Car A Tow one.

Be nice round Devon and Cornwall when you have to start reversing back up the road or even on Exmoor when you meet a skip lorry coming down the lane.

If you really must have a car you might as well tow a caravan IMO.

Why not start a new post with the title “ why do you tow a car behind your motorhome “, that should make an entertaining Sunday afternoon.
On second thoughts do a search on this forum and you will then find out why.

We’ve not towed a car, as we cannot see any need for it. We prefer the convenience of being able to manoeuvre easily and the ease of parking on Aires and sites.

I really don’t miss having a car. We walk or cycle and when we’ve explored an area we move on. I much prefer seeing places on foot or from the bike.

We’ve also found that you can park a MH in a lot of places, where you would park your car. For example a supermarket isn’t generally a problem. We’ve also parked on the seafront in lots of places and it’s great to have your kettle, toilet, dinner all with you.

Anyway, it’s each to their own but that’s us.

I thought a towcar was a requirement so that if you drive off your pitch for the day you could leave the motorhome there otherwise if you have no small car and you use your MH as local transport, you list your pitch?

No you don’t lose your pitch. You simply tell someone you’re coming back and you just leave your stuff out on your pitch. You can get motorhome parked here signs as well. We do this all the time and it’s really not a problem.
