To really top it off I still have the GX20-8020-1 Flowcharting Template
I learnt to use a flowchart template on my first ever computer course. Never used in in the real world though.

We used to use them for system documentation, which had to be tidy and readable, back in the 70s and 80s before on-line tools.

In all my years in IT, I never even saw a flowchart.

I can read the individual words on this thread but when they're added to the others, makes no sense

I started programming on an IBM System 3 Model 12. Had impressive storage at 12K and filled a very large computer room!
Anyone else remember RPG as a programming language?

I'm sure my parents told me about it when I was little.

Actually I lied:eek:.
Yes I do remember RPG. I was fortunate not to have to use it though as all of my work was in assembler.

Sad sods - living in the past. Get with it and take on some modern technology like me. I've just acquired a Vic 20 and am busy re-programming Blitz so the plane flies slower and the bombs are bigger :)
Strange you should mention that. The Vic-20 was the first computer I really started programming on and Blitz and Frogger were the first games I played on them. I started with CBM basic but found it limited and started doing subroutines in ASM. I then got hooked on ASM programming which led me onto games development on the C64 and then the Amiga in 68K Asm. I seriously miss programming in ASM and have recently been looking at the Atmel attiny85 microcontroller for my electronics projects to get back into it. I enjoy programming in C and PHP but it doesn't quite have the same satisfaction as ASM.

As part of of my electronics BTEC we built a simple computer from scratch and that had to be programmed using tiny toggle switches in binary. We had to write the code in Hex on paper then do the conversions etc... By this time I had been programming in Asm for years and had a head start on my class mates on this particular part of the course. It did however give me a bit of a hatred for Z80. But looking back Z80 is better than the complex mess that is x86 with it's segmented memory. 68K is still my favourite although I am looking forward to Atmel and Arm ASM :)

I was fortunate never to have had COBOL inflicted on me, shame really as I would have made a killing coming up to the Y2K issues.

You've got me thinking now. I half remember some package that one of the departments (engineers) used (something specialised in their field) that used RPG but gave them problems because it came without documentation or support (free gift from somebody in another LA who had developed himself). Probably one of the reasons I moved on to business analysis :D

At least Assembler used logical instruction mnemonics. Unlike Plan, which was a pain in the backside :D

Good but not good enough I'm afraid. I also still have the System/370 Reference Summary book (not a mere card), Quick Reference to PROFS and IBM Professional Office System Quick Guide.

To really top it off I still have the GX20-8020-1 Flowcharting Template
I chucked my book a few years ago but couldn't part with the GX20-8020-1 as it was my tool every working day for years.

How about a Fortran coding pad?
I've still got my COBOL one too and ICL punching documents.
Wanted to find my Concorde branded punched cards but cannot put my hand on them.

I'm just near the end of my 30 year career as an RPG developer. I started on System 34/36 then the AS/400. I always said my RPG/RPGLE skills would see me out (so I've resisted opportunities to retrain) and I was right. The system I am currently supporting is at the end of its working life and so am I.

I envy you. after 20 years programming, I was tempted into teaching BTEC by the hours and holidays as I had young children. It is so much harder teaching it than doing it! 10 years retired now though.

I just had a look in a cupboard and found my template wallet as well :D
Also some COBOL, Fortran and multi-purpose coding sheets; System/370 Reference Summary (forerunner of the book); punch cards of several colours and even a Lamson Paragon printer spacing chart :D
Probably some more crap valuable antiques in the loft as well
