Can anybody tell me what the grey valve at the top centre of the photo is for - and what position should it be in.
Thanks

It looks like it's onto an accumulator or filter but it also looks like the valve is closed.

Yes it all seems to work ok - I think that you may be correct and its an accumulator (like an electronic capacitor) that can smooth the water flow - will try turning it to the other (presumably open) position and see if it makes a differance.

Before opening it you need to know where the black pipe (on the RHS of the tap) goes because the tap is shut off now and once opened water will pass through that pipe to somewhere.

Agree about following the pipe work, the white tank looks like it has a label on it, could be useful to get a close up on that.

But there is the old adage "if it ain't broke"

Had a closer look and its the white bottle is a pressure equaliser. Its on the output of the pump. The valve opens by lifting the end of the grey lever upwards (not horizontally) and it looks like you lift it to drain the bottle and pipes presumable for winter storage.
Thanks for the replies.
