I know it`s a wasp of sort`s.... but it is huge...

He would not stay still long enough alongside the twenty P piece..

But it was nearly half as long again..

Hornet..? Queen Wasp... ?? twice as big as a normal wasp.. :)

Wasp, possibly Wasp Queen as it's so big, not right colouring or shape for a hornet. They are one thing I don't miss about France!

As said, Vespa Crabo the European hornet and the native hornet of the UK. Wonderful creatures, they should be protected (they are in Germany) as they do a lot of good.

The one to look out for in the UK is this one:

The Asian Hornet (Vespa Velutina) a serious predator of honey bees. It is very common in France and has wiped out a lot of bees. It seem inevitable it will arrive in the UK sooner or later. The identifying feature is the black thorax. If you brought a queen back hiding in your MH it could potentially do more harm than a truck load of illegal immigrants.

i get loads of these at my place in normandy. sting is no worse supposedly than a wasp and a bee sting is worse again. hornets are really docile creatures and fly with a purpose always trying to avoid you , not like annoying wasps. leave them alone and they will leave you alone , simples
