After loosing Sam our old boy we jumped straight back in to being dog owners with this bundle of trouble. We’ve forgotten what puppy training is like this first night is going to be a long one Any tips or advice wouldn’t go amiss no doubt there will be lot’s of puppy pictures to come

Have a proper secure cage in lounge , when he misbehaves put him in it . When the time is right make sure he gets good exercise periods. Yep we all forget what puppies are like and he's a terrier , you've got a few more years of mischief.

Cuteness overload at that age. I assume your motorhoming with him. Let him spend some time in the van before you go away. After a few days, start the engine but don't move. See how he reacts. If he seems to get nervous, you might have a problem.

We lost our old Jack Russell Hog he was 21 years old and had been everywhere with us from the Northern Lights to The Sahara desert but he died just a few weeks before our 2022 trip to Turkey and like you I jumped in quickly and bought 2 (yes 2!) JRT pups Iggy & Blue it was a nightmare! but one we wouldn't change they certainly kept our minds off poor old Hog and now a year later we're down in Morocco and they have settled a bit (I emphasise a bit!) But we wouldn't be without them and glad we did what we did....

When we lost our Gina we were both devastated, it took a long time to recover and eventually found a dog to rehome from a private home, it was a nightmare!
That episode didn’t work out and us and dog parted company.
It took a while to recover from that then got Pippa, Parsons Russell puppy. See avatar.
I had forgotten all about puppies, hubby had never had anything to do with puppies so it was an eye opener for him.
Up and out of the door, it seemed like every five minutes! We did have a couple of wet patches on the carpet but that was mostly our fault.

Get another... We got Bella at 3 months old to be a buddy for our Minky who was just over a year old. They love each others and entertain themselves, although they can go a bit mad at times when we just see blurs as they go zooming round our place. The amount of fun and enjoyment they've had with each other has given us no end of pleasure and I doubt I'd get a pup on it's own again.

Our cockerpoo is now 11 months after we had had him for a month I was seriously questioning my decision.
But he is fantastic and a great companion and lots of trouble ah o mean fun.
After 14 years of our Merlin you do forget what puppies are like.
But consistently of approach to behaviour seemed to pay off.
Training is getting there.
We use a training lead which he trails when allowed to run (enables us to get hold of him easier) we use a dog whistle for the first time with our dogs and it works.
He has learned that AhAh is the sound that means he is being naughty and stops ( mostly).
We make sure we stand with arms behind our backs and he sits before getting greetings that seems to stop him jumping all over you particularly when he sees someone for the first few minutes.
Regular visits to the same place in the garden for toilet and we use the same word each time he is taken to the toilet and I am pleased it works, he goes to the door straight away when told.
Those are the basics we have employed but as you know there will be a lot more challenges

Ours was only 4 when we got another puppy. You do soon forget how much hard work they are.

The first one that looks like a wolf, we never had to train much. She is very balanced. The Malinois puppy was a nightmare! I genuinely thought she would bite someone.

We employed a behaviourist and she is getting much better, in fact we are off shortly for her weekly sessions with lots of other problem dogs.

If you haven’t already, I would advise a crate though. They really help with toilet training as they generally won’t go to the toilet where they sleep.

Enjoy no sleep for a while, they quickly grow out of it though.

Sorry to disagree Parrot Face but he could see this as punishment and put him off cages for good. We put ours in a different room for a short time if they misbehave.

Never use a cage as punishment, it means that if you use it for other things, eg when you go out, he will associate it with being punished, a cage should be a safe space for them and somewhere they will go without an issue.

Snap, we have done the same. After losing our 12 1/2 year old last October, decided house was empty. Yes forgotten what it is like to have pup. One week on now and crate training. He sleeps in his at night from 10:30pm to 5:30am, although we have moved onto sofabed in same room, occasionally waking up, hubby says quiet and he goes back to sleep, next stage to get back to own bed.
Will be doing nights in moho on drive to get him used to it. He has his first MHF rally at norden farm in May.

Good point and I fully understand what you are saying. However with our very difficult Welsh Terrier pup we never intended to use a cage for any other reason but to put him in when he was 'out of control'. We always knew that these difficult times coincided with his tiredness. Putting him in a cage , and sometimes with a cover over it gave him a safe place to relax and he would 'sleep it off'. It worked for us but is not adviseable for all dogs. After a while he would go in it himself. When he settled and became a more chilled dog the cage went in the garage where it remains to this day.

Thanks for all your kind comments we’ve had him 24 hours now and after a difficult first night he’s settled down well. We’ve got him a crate that’s a bit too big for him now but should seem him through. Our last one wasn’t crate trained so a bit of a learning curve on that front. Took him out into the garden today so he has done a lot of his business out side
Unlike yesterday when he kept missing the training pads,that’s why we’re limiting his access to the kitchen and utility room as it’s tiled.

His fell asleep on my lap as I type this so I’d better put him in his crate for a nap

My advice with any puppy, but terriers in particular, is to have a routine playing a few games to tire them out just before you need them to have a good sleep. Much easier after they have all their jabs, and you get to walk them and socialise them. ALL dogs need routine, so start young

Punishment using a crate is definitely the wrong way to train any dog. You want the dog to see a crate as their room, somewhere for them to feel safe and sleep. All my dogs have adopted this and will sleep in a crate if I leave it open with bedding in. It taps into their natural behaviour

A PATTERDALE!!!!!!! They are the most energetic of dogs, and faithfull and true,ours lived to 17 & half,and was an escapologist ,but great with the kids,not so good with wildlife lol. Been known to take down a low flying blackbird, he will enlighten your life ,good luck and enjoy ;

We got another straight after loosing our dog, hubby has many jumpers with holes in the, his hands and arms were in shreds. Took 2 years to really calm her down but now she is the most laid back dog you could ever want and is perfect, well behaved and ;likes shopping, mainly because most shops have dog treats, even John Lewis stores. She is 5 next week. One pic at 8 weeks and one pick of 4 years old. She sleeps in verandah with dog hatch.

#muddywheeler. You need to reduce the inside of the crate enough for him to turn around and stretch, that way he won't wee or poop in his bed. We've cable tied a board panel in, some crates come with wire divider.
