Hi

we are seriously considering Full Timing in the South of England and would like some practical advice about the true cost of living in an RV/Motorhome.

Can anyone offer me a list of the monthly costs of living in an RV. Assuming the RV itself is paid off. We would not spend very much time on the road driving...rather switching between local CC campsites with 2 or 3 long road trips per year.

Things like the costs of insurance, gas, heating, batteries, maintenance, fuel, campsite fees, elsan, water, mail service, etc. what else would be a cost to living in an RV?

Just a basic idea of a monthly budget would help. We have never lived like this and are hoping the cost of living would be much less than running our 3 bed home but don't want to jump in and find that the only difference to our lives is a smaller house with wheels.

is there a resource online for the cost of this?

Hi Sally, this subject is discussed quite often. It seems more and more of us are looking to explore the possibilities of living permanently in a motorhome.

You will never get anywhere near a fixed cost because everyone is different. Some pay campsite fees of as little as £180 a month, others pay over £500 whilst some wild camp and pay nothing and others a mixture of both. What you spend on food now should not change when you go full-time, and your savings of council tax, might well be spent on diesel.

Others will give you examples of their experience, but you really won't know a true cost for your style of fulltiming till you have been doing it for a while.

The answer is simple. 'How long is a piece of string?'. It is down to your lifestlye and expectations. WE, that is Sandy & I live on around £8000 a year including everything. Camp site fees, fuel and transport, insurance, MOT, Tax and we are STILL paying taxes on our meagre income. Others require £20,000 or more.

The cost of fulltiming. Asume you have a motorhome for holidaying so you would ahve the motorhome anyway. You would pay the repairs, the mot, the tax, the insurance. You would use it for 20 nights per year at average of £15 per night so spend £300 on campsite fees.

You are now fulltiming. Repairs would go up as its getting more use so put £10 a week to one side. Because you are ft and spending more time on sites you can get better deals. Site fees £3000 less the £300 you would spend anyway =£2700. This incudes your elec, water rates, council tax etc.

So true cost of fulltiming £3200 per year. Food costs - you would eat anyway, clothe anyway etc etc.

Now you add your costs - travel etc and you have it
