The plastic flap on the outside of the van of the Whale water inlet has snapped off. I have a replacenent on order, but I need to ease the top of the casing from the van wall which is bedded in mastic once the screws have been eased off.

This has to be done to get the plastic hinge on the flap behind the back of the casing before tightening the four screws up.

My questions are:

What is the best way of easing the mastic off the van at the top to get the old broken hinge off and the new hinge on.

What is best to reseal the broken mastic to seal the unit back onto the van wall.

Many thanks in advance

Non setting mastic, just gently prize it away with a spatula and it will come. Clean up with the spatula and clean with brake cleaner and reapply.

Thanks.

I don’t have brake cleaner. Anything else I could use to clean the old sealant off.

White spirits though I think you might need to wash that down with soap and water after.

I am fairly sure petrol will do it too but a can of brake cleaner is much safer and easier. Methylated spirits I think will also do it.

I’ve just had a look and Screwfix sell brake cleaner cheaply enough.

I’m just a little concerned as brake cleaner sounds very “heavy duty” (without knowing what’s in it), and worried that it might damage the wall skin of the van, if it spills/runs down the wall of the van?

Have you used it?

Repeatedly, on all areas of the van and other surfaces. Never damaged a thing, indeed I will be using it to clean up and install a roof light tomorrow.

It evaporates so quick it’s difficult to see how it can damage anything though I have known some plastics not like it when soaked in the stuff for hours.

Just don't breathe in the fumes and if concerned spray some on a cloth and try it on an inconspicuous area first. Maybe like a wheel arch. I have never known it attack anything unless as already stated left to soak.
