Just looking
Hi
We are doing a self build camper and the shower (with a toilet in there too) is an irregular shape. We were thinking of making a ply / wood base and then putting some sort of membrane in, and then lining it using a non slip wet room flooring with welded corners (similar to those you see in hospitals sometimes). Does anyone have any experience of doing this - or any alternatives for bespoke shower / toliet waterproof flooring...
Thanks

Could you create a fibre glass tray with 'high sides' yourself? It would be bespoke and def fit your required area. Perhaps have a copper sheet floor so you can weld the seams/corners?

Thanks! Fibreglass sounds like a possibility; had not thought of that...we had thought about a stainless steel tray, but need to think about weight (and price!)

What about tanking it as per a domestic wet room ?
The stuff you use is brilliant at forming a waterproof barrier but maybe movement in a camper would be too great.
Fibreglass probably better thinking about it.

Wet room tanking paint, tape, and corner sections would work well. Fully waterproof and flexible.
Another option would be two part apoxy resin. Same stuff they use in major dealership workshops and is also used as a paintable waterproof membrane in building.

When i suggested copper sheeting it waa because thats how some older wet rooms were designed, with the brass waste fitting being soldered or brazed onto the sheet to make it a fully waterproof connection, along with the corners being soldered or brazed it created a water tight box with an outlet for the water. You wouldnt even need to tile it. Just make sure the sides are high enough and then finish the walls (pvc planking or sheets for weight advantages) over the high sides and keep the front as high as practical

Being a plumber , I hate wet floors , a hole lot of trouble , I got at least one call a week asking if I could look at their leaking floor !!! , that said I needed one in my own house ( forming a steam/shower room) SO I formed a fibreglass tray to make sure it was water tight then used mosaic tiles on top to Finnish, in your case I would I would make a fibreglass tray (in place) then cover it with some form of sealed vinyl flooring, if it leaks through the vinyl the fibreglass will catch it

I wouldn’t tile a floor in a MoHo. Too much movement and too much weight.

wood + motorhome = damp

I would do everything I could to avoid wood in wet areas

Buy a large high sided shower tray, cut bits out of the middle to get the right shape and then join back together with supports under. Refinish the top and paint it (body shop or one of those household smart repair companies)

Most new motorhomes have showers. From what ive read most damp comes from the outside in, not the inside out. So a properly designed, fabricated and installed shower tray (room) shouldnt be a contributor to damp in the motorhome. There are lots of off the shelf units you could install but your post said you needed a bespoke one, so thats where the different opinions might come in

Thanks all...some good ideas here...the thought re. Wooden floor was only as a frame / pro forma /support and obviously would need lining with something fully waterproof, and as people have suggested, either slightly flexible, or welded/soldered metal of some sort...Re. Tiling, I have seen that done in a camper , but as someone has said, would be nervous about movement so that idea went straight down the plughole :-) (and anyway I know you were not suggesting this for a camper (although sounds nice in a house ).
we did worry about leaking flexible vinyl wetroom floors but the fibreglass liner with vinyl over might work, as may the copper (or stainless) liner....As mj suggested, I had also thought about cutting up and rejoining a bigger tray...a bit worried about joints but I guess the thetford c200 shower tray / toilet surround have joins so presume they can be made water tight...there was a mention of refinishing to make watertight...I wonder what they would use (aside from a gallon of trusty mastic? (I am joking before i get a flurry of comments! )

I know you don’t want to tile it !! , this is just a picture to show how I finished my shower room ,it was an awkward shape so no pre bought trays were available SO I made the floor with glass fibre matting with epoxy resin this is easy to form to any shape of floor & is fully watertight , it has a 4” upstand up the wall , then the wet wall overlapped to form a good seal , You can get plastic wet wall so very lightweight
the Finnish of the fibreglass isn’t great but very robust & will take some flex , then cover with whatever you like

I doubt the weight of a square yard of tiles will be that much of a problem and so long as you use a flexible adhesive and grout, i should flex enough. I would use those very small pebble type tiles or one large tile ! So long as it isnt the tiles that are the waterproofer, it doesnt matter if the joints open up a bit does it? Or even use duckboards made of hardwood strips attached to a flexible webbing, so you can lift it out for cleaning the tray? It would also help in spreading any load evenly across the floor

Hi Kate, any photos/measurements/diagrams of the washroom space you can show us? We might come up with other ideas if we can 'see' what the space is like.

We were asked to manufacture a shower tray for a Landrover conversion. It was made out of chequer plate. Non slip and light weight. It turned out really nice.

We are now retired but we are sure there would be someone else that could make you one.

Hi Thanks all!
The checker plate idea I am sure will appeal to my better half- similar to the original idea of using stainless (and although maybe not quite so easy to clean, probably more non-slip....sorry no pic of shower / toilet but basically approx 110cm x 65 cm but with a large corner for the door (approx 55 -60cm wide) cut off...'bijou' I believe the term would be to describe the final area :-)
