Heading out to west Wales next week and most of the campsites look like they are booked out. Whats it like for wild camping? Any hassles?

depends where you are going in the west. but generally not much opportunity unless you know the areas very very well.
especially during the busiest part of the year...

there are plenty of CL's with basic facilities where you should get a spot.

Sounds horrendous , hassle etc roll on winter less hassle hopefully for wilding

On another thread about campsites I posted two article about Wales.

One was how busy campsites were.

The other about how pissed off locals were with tourists.

There appears to be availability here,
£21 or £25 with Ehu.
People are still wild parking on nearby Burry Port harbour.

I was advised by the Harbour Master he expects the council to start moving them on soon.
Cheers

I was down Burry Port last week 10 vans in the car park where it says no overnight. 5 small/PVC on the front parked sensibly and a few more in the other car parks along the front. No problem with the locals quite few stopped for a chat but many I have been chatting to for years (with and without a van)

But it really could be the beginning of the end as the council have fenced off part of the waste ground in the article

I was in Freshwater West today and there were stacks of motorhomes.

Apparently before lockdown the LA were handing down £100 per night fines but there was no sign today it was being enforced at the moment.

Please don’t go there though. It seems to be plagued by yuppie VW types far more than usual.

When the development was proposed a few years ago, there was "talk" about a Motor home parking area, also further Aires around the county.

Word is National parks and LA are moving overnighters on, they say as illegal if you don’t have landowners permission.

goodness knows how they cover all of pembrokeshire, but must target main car parks .

all of which seem to have the no overnighting signs.

best bet is commercial sites, the caravan club site and cls. Britstops etc,
it’s pretty full and busy at the moment.

if you choose to wild camp, arrive v late , move v early and be well off the beaten track.

And the usual “ just leave your tyre marks“ please

powys c.c have allowed overnight parking in some if their car parks, check their web site .

Good luck.

I live and wild camp in Pembrokeshire. It is difficult at this time of the year and a number of locals are anti motorhomers. They hold the usual view that you should use a campsite.

There are loads of campsites with vacancies

The local authority and parks have been carrying out early morning spot checks and issuing tickets.

I am in the gower at the minute and its busy sites are full, moving on to tenby today only because one site had a cancellation otherwise i could not find anywhere every site was full.
Then going to Rhayader which again is all full i got the last pitch on a field no ehu etc all other sites i rang were rammed full

They are fining campervans and motorhomes in lots of different locations because some are restricting access for emergency vehicles and leaving rubbish everywhere and emptying toilets in bushes etc.its the same old thing, a few that are ruining it for everyone.

Maybe the reason that they hold that view is because '' wild '' camping is banned in Wales, unless you have the landowners permission ?

But as you live in Pembrokeshire, you already knew that . . .

I think the days of true "wild" camping are numbered, :( there are just too many of us at the moment, and the privilege has been abused by too many people too many times. Even in Scotland that traditionally has been extremely tolerant are getting fed up.

I live in Gwynedd, the situation here is horrendous as a good proportion of the general public are ignoring the social distancing rules. Our population has quadrupled in three weeks, as well as the campsites being full, wild campers are being moved on. Our MPs and county councillors have urged the Welsh Government for urgent action as the situation is getting out of hand, there were 20000 in Abersoch last weekend and Barmouth, Porthmadog, Pwllheli have experienced similar overcrowding Daily Post Article . If you are heading into either West or North Wales I would suggest that you wait until the main season ends, you will enjoy our beautiful areas more and have a more relaxed trip, and most likely be much safer

Another wild camping spot closed near Dale due to irresponsible campers. I was there a month ago and it was a shame to see certain persons abusing the site, partying into the early hours, music blaring, foul language and more. They were living on their vans and had been at this location for weeks. Say no more!

Reported on Facebook:

Setting things straight.
Gann car park is now mostly blocked off. There is roadside space for some cars. It is NOT owned by PCC it's the Dale Estate, and they have had enough of an endless stream of motor homes & campers taking it over.
Village and area isn't against responsible camping - that's why we have campsites, for responsible campers.
However being next to a SSSI and part of the coastal path doesn't mean the surrounding hedges can be used as literally a toilet, rubbish in the hedges inc glass, and responsible locals inc myself being intimated by a number of motor home users...
I've seen chemical toilets being emptied into the lagoons, people squatting in hedges / path and casually walking back to their camper vans...
Agreed not all visitors are like this - but for now it's restricted.

Well I'm fairly new to motorhoming and some of the above stories are horrendous. Cant understand why people cant respect their surroundings. I have tried now to book a couple of sites with no luck but am still prepared to take my chances. Will let you know how I get on.

It's about respecting the law in Wales as well . . .

I would hazard a guess, shell island being closed isn't helping.

There are offences under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 Sections 61 and 62 of trespassing on land and trespassing with vehicles.

Irrespective of any additional Covid regs' that may or may not be in place.

But that is not really aimed at the odd motohome stopping on private land for a night.
It's aimed at encampments which are causing problems to the local population, which admittedly has been happening.

Unfortunately it's not an '' odd '' abuser, there are many instances not reported, these freeloaders show their total disrespect for the law / rules just by being where they are.

It's deliberately vague i.m.v. - it can apply to these nuisances & if i was the landowner I'd certainly enforce it.

Its only against the law if the landowner objects to it. If they are not bothered there is no problem, so not everyone is breaking the law.

You only see the ones that are causing bother, I suspect they are thousand of instance every year where wild campers, camp and move on with anyone being the wiser or bothered. :giggle::giggle::giggle:
