I am a Newbie
The Welsh Government are considering introducing a Tourism Tax for all visitors.
No date or amounts have been decided yet, still at consultation stage.
Would have thought that after Covid affected visitor numbers to Wales, a new tax would have been the last thing the industry needed.
Would a tax stop you visiting Wales ?

This reared it’s head a few months ago. As for not visiting Wales, how much tax and to whom it applies would be my deciding factor.

They've been considering since at least April.

Edinburgh is giving serious consideration to a tourist tax on accommodation. There was a similar idea for the Western Isles a couple of years ago but it was nipped in the bud.

Happens in France, can’t see why 40p a night added to site fees couldn’t happen there either.

If it was spent on boosting infrastructure for tourism then everyone’s a winner.

It wouldn't be .like all councils the best you could hope is that it was pissed up the wall.
rather than wasted on increasing remuneration for those in charge

I agree, if it isn’t spent on improving the local area then it’s very unfair.

As a community though, we can’t moan that Council’s don’t provide for us and then moan when they introduce a charge to provide for us.

It gives us a lever to demand better facilities and stops the you don’t contribute anything rubbish that some people spout.

How many tourist nights would there be in Wales in a year? 4 million? x 40p = £1.6m - just about pay for an infrastructure feasibility study. if most costings are a guide.

Do you tax business men visiting to do trade with Wales? If not I am a 'tradesman' doing a trade for 4 pints down the pub, so exempt?

All tax is turd, I just like to roll mine in glitter. :-)

I'm in the process of writing a strongly worded letter to my MP as I'm disgusted by the last two suggestions that have come out of the Cardiff cattle shed, sorry Senedd. First of all there was the blanket 20mph speed limit in every 30mph or built up area, now there's this so called tourist tax for each night that everyone who spends time in Wales be it in a tent or a hotel.

Just the other week it took us almost 4 hours to drive to Tenby from Mid-Wales (117 miles) how much longer will it take once this 20 mph limit is introduced? They claim it's about road safety but as I've wrote elsewhere on the forum it will probably cause more danger and frustration to pedestrians and road users than currently exists.
As a result of the poor road network, the journey times in Wales are so much longer in Wales than elsewhere in the UK, not just for tourists but also for business.
They can't afford to make visiting Wales less attractive, certainly not at a time when people are counting their pennies because everything has gone up in price.
It's all about politics which is something their not particularly good at here in Wales.
Rant over!!

Bloody cheek? Scotland, that wee place at the top of England has been subsidising the whole of the Britain since the 70's with North Sea oil revenue. Have a look across to Norway 180 miles from Scotland, a country of similar size, geography and population and ask the question, why do they enjoy one of the highest standards of living on the planet?
They subsidise no one :whistle2:

Not much oil off the coast of Wales, but they are now talking about selling water to England "The new Welsh Oil Rush" to quote a member of the local talking shop

They pay high taxes 😉😊

This will also applies to people living in Wales, who decide to holiday here. If it helps with improving holiday amenities, why not. No one grumbles about paying it abroad and looking at the numbers touring there, doesn’t stop people going.

Another reason to wild camp next time I go to Wales. I don’t mind if you call me an FLT.

Went to Wales in June, since Covid they have clamped down on all the nice wild spots so I won't be going back.

Wales used to be great to visit but not any more. Crap roads, too many low speed limits already and when you eventually get to where you re going you probably can't park anywhere close anyway, double yellow lines, height barriers, weight limits etc. Totally over regulated IMO, The final straw was the 50mph all over the Horseshoe pass. So, no the tourist tax wont affect me at all because Ive already stopped going and I only live 10 miles from the border.
