I feel that we have been prevented from doing a lot of the things that we would have liked to have done because we have been weighed down with ‘stuff’ – steady jobs, a house, possessions. Would we have lived a happier life without these? I often think that the answer could have been yes.
Sorry I disagree, we are all restricted from doing things by either money or health restrictions but the grass can always look greener. The stuff that you say is weighing you down is life, it is what you make of it. I dont see how getting rid of job and possessions could make for a happier existence.

Another quote from the book: -
We know so many people who are hanging their hearts and their hopes and their dreams on that nebulous phase of life referred to as 'retirement .' People say it all the time: “When I retire I’m going to ....” fill in the blank.

How many people never make it? Many, it seems. We know people still working full time jobs well past retirement age.

Folks who, in their forties, wake up with a debilitating disease that shatters their dreams for this lifetime.

Parents who turn around to find their sweet children grown and gone, having missed all of those opportunities to do fabulous things with them because they were “too busy.”

Possessions really are over-rated. Quality of life is worth so much more. I used to sell businesses for a living. It was such a stressful job and even when I wasn't working I was thinking about work - often at 3am! I realised that if I continued to do this job, which I'd had for many years, I would probably have a heart attack. The day I left I felt as if I had been released from a prison. I have never regretted that decision even though my earnings dropped dramatically when I took another job.

On and off for many years.
I know we are getting a bit off topic but I think a lot of our life choices depend on the responsibilities we have, along with our childhood conditioning.

To own one's house was always seen as a pinnacle of success in my own family and to rent seen as "second class" whilst living in a vehicle would have been regarded with something akin to horror. "Bricks and mortar" were seen as the safest investment. I am a child of my times and never considered breaking my conditioning until I had a massive and unexpected jolt which made me question and examine everything.

One has to make choices based on what one knows and one's attitude to risk along with what one considers one's duty to society.

My parents are now becoming dependent on me and their demands and suggestions have become increasingly bizarre. This too is making me revisit my own plans and expectations. I will always do the best I can for my parents but I won't allow myself to become "burned out" so plans have been made and will be followed so that everyone knows what is and is not expected. When the time when I am free of all responsibility comes I hope to be young enough, and have enough money, to do things for me. I do not want to end up like my Mum with more money than she can ever spend / need and regrets that she didn't get to go on a cruise or shop in New York or.......

Even more off topic:

I know of one family that went on holiday knowing they would not have enough money to get home unless they won big in the casino. They didn't win and their family / friends had a whip round to get them home. Would I have done that? No, but I would also have missed out on the holiday. The same family rented a very beautiful house, never paid a penny in rent and were eventually evicted but appeared more than happy to have lived in a prestigious location in luxury even knowing they would end up with CCJs etc. These people were always fun and appeared to be carefree but not the sort to have any sort of financial or business dealings with. As one of their friends said "brass necked and amoral". They may have bounced through life taking (I would go as far as to say stealing) where they could but with no security of any kind. Last time I heard they were living in a derelict static caravan whist waiting for the local authority to rehouse them.

It's been very uplifting to read all these lovely posts.

Look forward to the first morning you wake debt free. Your hearts will soar, no matter where you live. Debt is a burden to the body and soul - well done for taking positive action to out an end to it all.

I'm sorry about your stress.
Living in a motorhome has its benefits.
On a site you've paid for electricity so you can afford to keep warm. In my house, the winters were cold, cost a fortune to heat just a couple of rooms. Never been cold in 2 winters in my van

Dogs no problem at all. Yes, they have to go out on leads but have got used to a quick walk round a campsite in pyjamas, sweatshirt and Welles ( me, not the dogs) at 11 pm.
I've also got 2 cats with me, again no real problems.
No TV licence to pay, you know almost exactly what bills will be, with bit of contingency fund for repairs.

And something different can always turn up at any time.

Good luck.

Similar things happened to me at least twice in the past.
Life is for living as best you can.
Some people will try to take advantage of you, some will support you and some will even envy you. Some will mock you.

The important thing is to believe in yourself.
Do nothing to others that you would not want done to you.
Remember that life is finite.
You will make mistakes.
Mistakes made are easily avoided again.
You will definitely find out who your real friends are, and then cherish them. (You may not even have met them yet)
Spread your wings my friend and don`t look over your shoulder.
Stay debt free and look forward to see what is over the hill and round the bend.
Life is good, problem is, that most of us have forgotten how to live it.
Follow your chosen path with gusto and take your strength from each other.
I hope that one day we may cross paths and perhaps compare notes.
Good luck to you and don`t worry even though it may seem to be going all wrong.
Remember, that if you make plans, God can often have a way of thwarting them: be flexible.

Bruce and Irene, what a terrible thing to happen. If it were us I think we would want to murder whoever did it. 18 months work literally gone up in smoke. Our hearts go out to you.

As you said yourself, better this way than receiving horrible letters you are scared to open.
