Hi
Recently bought our Carthago A class and the V5 says 3500kg.
Just inside the cab door are two plates.

Has it been down plated to 3500kgs do you think or am I reading this entirely wrong?

What are your thoughts?

I have a Carthago and the left plate is the Fiat plate and the right one is the Alko plate. In my case the Alko plate is the correct one.

I always thought that the converters plate over rides the Fiat plate!!!

either way
it looks as if the official weight is over 3500kgs, unless there is another Cathago plate somewhere, what does the V5 say the Revenue weight is.

as far as i am aware the V5 only shows the revenue weight that is what your road tax costs. it is the last plate fitted that i believe to be the legal loadings of the chassis.
so IMV unless there is another plate you max loading is over 3500kgs so need a C1

How can you have a gross weight of 3850 with max axle weights of 1850 and 2000. Some balancing tricks required?

Yes it does - one exclamation mark would suffice if any at all.

C1’s not a problem

thank you for correcting my punctuation.

do you think that was really a necessary remark to make?

1850 plus 2000 is 3850, so the max load on the rear is 2000 and the front is 3850
Yes I realise that but there is no allowance for loading, usually the axle weights add up to more than the gross weight.

So, do we think it was built as a 3850 and then down plated to 3500

No I think it's been uprated to 3850kg according to the left plate!

Not that I know anything about A classes I lurk in the self build bilge.

Cheers James

It's not been uprated, well sort of, that's the new weight plate from the converter when converting from Fiat chassis cab to motorhome.

If 3500kg there will be a plate elsewhere.

Cheers James

There will probably be a third plate perhaps near the hab door. Mine has two plates under the bonnet , one Fiat 3650, one Alco 3850 and a third from Hymer plated at 3500ks located on the rear outside cill near the habitation door.

it could be on the slam panel under the bonnet.

Only if someones bothered to stick it on! Our had been uprated to 5400 and the sticker was still tucked in with the manuals!

There should be a 3rd converters plate from Carthago and that is the only one that counts.
As its on the light AMC chassis I assume it is either a Compact Line or a C Tourer they are often sold at 3500 kg most are tight to run at that so worth uprating to 3850.

Yes Lenny, it’s a C Tourer.
I can’t find the third plate though.
I don’t have a problem going up in weight. I just wondered if it was built to 3850 and then down plated to suit the customer who bought it new. Therefore, it should be a simple exercise to get it back up.

one Plate two, plates or no plates,,,,, mY understanding, is that the V5 is the RulE here and therefore this is a simple enough up plating Exercise…,.!

I expect is was built as a 3500, I don't think they offer a 3850 option just 4250 on the maxi chassis.
Unless it's one of the shorter ones it will be very tight to run at 3500.

If the V5 and DVLA have it at 3500kg, then 3500 kg is the weight that a roadside check would use as their gospel
If up plating creates you no issues, ( licence/speed limits/ insurance) , then I would get it done

So what is your thoughts 3850 on the plate Lenny? Does that just mean the AL-KO chassis would normally be a 3850?
