WD40 ? (1 Viewer)

Hi all, hope you can help - collected my MH yesterday [Chausson 628], lovely drive back to home and everything seems OK. One of the external locker locks was stiff and freed up before I took it - would anyone recommend a lube for keeping them loose ? WD40 - also what do people use to clean and shine the outisde of the habitation area, being plastic - thanks

Try this rather than WD40, also good for many other jobs such as locks, hinges and catches.

Think silicone spray will be better than wd40, plus you can use that on other things as well, hab blinds, casette toilet seal.

For cleaning/polishing I use either standard wash method followed by Autoglym Super resin polish or I use a waterless wash and wax product.

Another vote for silicone spray.. Big can at screwfis for about £4.
Read in past NOT to use WD40 as it makes the plastic hinges swell and eventually will seize.

And more to the point WD40 is a water dispersants and not really designed for lubrications but does after
A fashion, and as been pointed out it can cause swelling in some plastic so be careful,

If we talk about Wd40 many people are using this but not know that Wd40 are working on just like cleaning or it's just a fashion.

Silicone spray for moving parts and Nick seems to like Autoglym products for cleaning the van, we seem to have a ridiculous number of bottles of different products for different bits of the van but it keeps him amused when he‘s not playing golf!

if it's a moving plastic part, silicone lubricant, if its a lock graphite. WD40 is a water dispersant, as in the name and can actually damage plastic parts. Also useless for cleaning electrical contacts as creates another problem

Never ever spray wd40 into a lock, especially a motorhome one or the lock will clog up and seize. Graphite spray lubricates and protects the lock

Never stops people from thinking of wd40 as a cure all in their toolbox though

I have looked at many vehicles with electrical gremlins and you know when you lift the bonnet and smell wd40, it's going to be a right pain in the bum

Had a sticky hab door lock some years ago. Purchased Halfords liquid grease, which has the probocis tube attachment. Managed to slide the tube inside, worked a treat.

Graphite for locks, the lock industry told me, never oil or grease.

WD40 will free off stiff moving parts but it's not a long term lubricant. The item needs to be oiled or greased after feeing off.

WD40 is NOT a lubricant in the true sense.
It was developed as a release spray for rusted bolts etc...... Pludgas is a similar product.

It generally frees seized metal parts but will still need a lubricant.

W(ater) D(ispersant)40. Good for what it was designed for. Used it many times on my old Mini (note not a BMW) to disperse the water that got into the Engine bay and onto the HT leads and Distributor, Despite the plastic bag over it!!. Less successful as a Lubricant as it dries out very quickly and can attract dirt. Home made Method of freeing rusted parts? Diesel or Paraffin mixed with Auto Transmission fluid. (my Dad). Plastic lubricant? Mr Sheen!. And its surprising just what you can use Vinegar for!.

WD-40 will strip any grease from your locks,also cause rubber to swell and eventually sticky. It dries after a couple of weeks then you need to lube the locks you used it on Graphite is the way to on locks

Never use anything on locks except graphic lock lube.

I have tried this stuff and can't fault it so far and better than wd40.
