I've been considering waxoyling the underside (extended chassis/brake pipes, etc) of our Hymer.
From old, I'd always considered 'Finnegans' Waxoyl to be the premium product..but I can't find it anywhere. Lots of mention of 'Hammerite Waxoyl' though.
So, does Finnegans no longer exist? Have Hammerite bought the patent rights? Is it the same thing??
Or, is there a better new -fangled product these days (Dinitrol)?
Thanks

I think Hamerite and waxoyl are made by the same company, used to be Finnegans in Prudhoe Northumberland, think they are still going.

yes it is called hammerite waxoil now . same stuff .
works a treat. warm it up on a gas burner then it really runs in all the cracks . or joins inside a box section .

Many thanks - this looks like what I need then!
From your reply it seems you've DIY'd the job! Do you need/use a spray gun? I'm only intending coating the chassis etc and sump. I've also heard its quite a mucky job!

yes i use a shultz gun or a paint sprayer . mind i do have full workshop facilities.
it is a mucky job . you do need to get into any box sections the chassis has.
luckily for me ,mines a c section chassis so its easy.

many many years! since I was a kid
just make sure the part to be sprayed is clean and dry before starting to waxoyl. then keep it off the exhaust too as it dont half smoke when hot

i have the original pump up sprayer with probe from years back and also a compressor and spray gun. believe it or not i often find the old pump up system quicker and easier to use and clean after use

Thanks vwlan and TheBig1 for the info and advice - I think the chassis is also 'C' section profile (Fiat Alko) but with no ramps it could be just one mucky job too far....still, might be possible.
Thanks again. :)

Waxoyl are still alive and kicking. I know this because we make the pump assembly for the metal canister. They are under the hat of AKZO NOBEL now but still have lots of stock of the cans of waxoyl

If you give me a postcode I can tell you where the nearest store is

Putting it on the gas burner! Risky!. Take seal out and put can into a bucket then fill with nr boiling water, after filling spray put it back in to keep hot. (y)

used to do that but find its far quicker on the burner and gets hotter . that seems to let it seep into the joins better . let it bubble then into gun and spray .i find an old shultz container is enough at a time . i can also fit a tube onto the nozzle of the gun to get into long box sections etc .
mind it would be nice to have a new vehicle done properly before they build all the interiour . theres always weird places that rust later and you think why as it rusted there .
i have one place above the reat aperture of my back window of the cab . bloomin annoying . but i can cut it out and repair .

I've had a gallon tin in the garage for about ten years, I pulled it out the other week and it was leaking, the can had rusted through:LOL:

Yes, had the same happen to me. Admittedly the rust was mainly on the outside!

For info, I found two 'specialist' rustproofing companies on the net (easy enough to find so won't embarrass them by quoting names). Both state they use 'Waxoyl' as their premium product for preventing rust. So, to get an idea of what it may cost to have the underside of the 'van treated I sent both companies an on-line request vis their 'enquiries' form.
This was on Monday evening...............so far I've not heard back from either company! Don't they want my business??

I phoned two companies and they came back with quotes for 520 plus vat from one and 670 pounds from the other company
for our van. A worthwhile job but a tad expensive.:(

Blimey - that sounds expensive when you consider the actual cost of the Waxoyl itself - still, as you say, it's a worthwhile job and the cost probably relates to the fact it's not a very pleasant job!
