Always learning.
Hi Peeps,I’ve been reading a lot about carrying freshwater en route,I would just like a general consensus of wether it’s a good idea or not,,I understand the fuel aspect, etc, etc, but I would like an honest opinion of what YOU do,,cheers,

We fill up at home for shorter journeys when we are leaving later in the day, will be travelling full for a while to reduce the need for top ups during the coronavirus outbreak.

We travel with full tanks in case we decide to wild on the way. If heading for a booked place, then maybe 1/4 tank?

We travel with 50 litres, enough for an overnight stop on the way, both using showers ect

Depends how you are going to use your van. If you plan on only short distances and always use campsites, then empty. We tend to travel mid to long distances and rarely use campsites, so always full.

Thanks,,that’s just settled my mind,, (y)

I only have a small coach built van with a small payload, and I travel with whatever is in the tank at the time, topping up as required.

I only ever drain the tank for winter or flushing.

If you have payload issues, it may be to your benefit to travel with the minimum possible.

Always a full tank, it never ceases to amaze me how much we use. It takes about 10-15 mins to fill our tank on a regular tap and that disappears in around 3 days when trying to save it, less if feeling cavalier...
Saying that, payload is one thing that I don't worry about but if you're 3500kg then100kg of water is a luxury

Just a quick thought,,it’s a shame I can’t take you all with me,,,I’d never need a manual,,lol

My payload is 907kg so should be ok,,

When touring abroad or Scotland we always travelled with a full tank plus a couple of 5 litre bottles for drinking/brew ups. Always topped up whenever. Same with refillable LPG, and sometimes diesel topped up.
In the UK we usually travel half full of water but carry 2 x5 litres of drinking water as there is always somewhere to fill up.

It'd totally stuff up your payload though ...

I always carry a full tank when touring. You never know when you can fill up again, especially abroad. I always empty grey and toilet when possible as well.
Phil

Same as, the extra cost in fuel is negligible imho

Does anyone use their fresh water tank for drinking? I’ve been using Elsil, and seems to be ok?

I normally fill up when I get to my destination - the only time I have had a problem was the Classic racing at Crystal Palace - plenty of taps but all marked: "DO NOT DRINK THIS WATER"

I guessed they meant 'non potable' 🙂

A quick walk to the shops & a six pack of 2l bottles solved the problem

Used for Kettle, coffee machine and cooking water but have bottled water for just drinking (I have one or two a day, same as at home)

We prefer to free camp rather than sites so over here I fill the tank. Abroad we used to do the same but not now, usually travel over half full, there's water everywhere even if we have to buy it from Aldi or Lidl where it's stupid cheap - I don't panic like I used to.

I do, She does not unless boiled, but I drank tank water on my boat in Greece for 30 years and in the MH for 11 years. I am still here - must have built up resistence to most bacteria. ;) :giggle:

As to running with tank full, as we wildcamp a lot or Aires, we try to have the fresh water full at all times. Grey and black water empty at every opportunity.

Geoff

Water from the tank goes in kettle, if I was to need to boil something for cooking (I'm not really sure why I bothered to put a saucepan in my van), dishwashing, and personal cleansing including teeth.
I'll usually have a 2 litre bottle of water in the fridge incase I want a cool drink.
My tank is only 60litre so the water is being emptied and refreshed frequently if I'm out and about, but I'll give it a flush through every couple of months and a douse with a purifier.
Unless I'm going specifically to a site I'd always set off full.

We always set off full. Sometimes we don’t where we be that night.
