Hi Everyone
I have problems getting my water filler cap of a lot of the time as it gets stiff, and my hands are not as strong as they were. I am going to make a 3D printed key to make it easier to remove, and thought funsters would be interested. Only problem, is I’m not sure how many water cap types there are. Can anyone interested send me pictures of their water caps so I can gauge how types there are. I’m hoping for one type. 😊 but there is bound to be more.

Cheers Everyone. PaulandChrissy

I cant send you a photo at the moment, but I’m reminded of the suggested remedy for water cap problems.........plunge it into boiling water for a while.......apparently it works wonders.

Oh,and mine is the same as yours.

I’ve cleaned and stuff before. It works for a bit, and then while you’re at the water filling station with a bunch of onlookers behind you waiting , the flipping thing won’t come off. 🤪

Mine is different, but maybe has easier grip. I too have problems with grip due to Dupytrens and arthritis.

I also had that type of cap and it was a pain to get it off and my hands used to ache afterwards .

Had various vans but only had this problem on current van. Dealer could loosen it but problem always returned. After various attempts at solution, bought another cap. End of problem.

That's reminded me ours is sometimes tight, when on site I don't turn the cap fully when replacing it. Anyway just been out and put some silicone grease on it and it's super smooth now 👌

Just shows how little I know!!!!!!!!

About 3 years ago I put a thread on here about my dodgy filler cap,and I think it was lunarman who came up with the solution for me. Well, got the van home a few days ago and started fiddling and fettling,as you do, and thought I would try the “immerse in boiling water” cure as it was a bit stiff (ooooer missus). Now it doesn’t work at all!!!! That is,it’s permanently in locked position, fortunately not on the van.

Ive tried wd40,sweet talking it,and hitting it on the ground, but it’s not playing the game.

So the duchess has ordered another off the tinternet, about £14.

I forgot one of the golden rules: If It Ain’t Bust Don’t Fix It. :rolleyes::rofl:

I wouldn’t put a lockable cap in boiling water. You will have a very clean cap, but with all the lubricant washed out of the locking mechanism, only one thing will result. STRESS. Have you tried the big hammer cure. That’s one step up from throwing it on the floor. 🥴

Yep, chuck in a bucket of boiling water, it works. Never had problems afterwards.

What's the chances of printing a filler cap that will take a standard garden hose fitting?

That’s one of my next projects. Will be on it in the next week or so. I have done one that you pass a hose through and has a collar on the back to stop it falling out. Wanted to do one with a hozelock male fitting on it. Everyone will want to use different size hoses and connectors, so was trying to workout a modular versatile system that works for everyones needs.

Getting there!
How about a removable section that fits onto the funnel you already make for holding a hose (hose inserted in funnel)

I can test one for you :whistle2:

You can just slide a hose in through the funnel tube and it will be firm enough to stay in place as it is. No adapters needed. Just tried it, and it works just fine. 👍

Excellent news, I was hoping that might be the case.

So it’s a two in one accessory, maybe add that to the description. (y)

Good idea. Will wait a little while though, so I can catch up with demand. It’s been very popular, and each one takes 8hrs to print. I only have two 3D printers and they run 24/7 to keep up. 👍😊😉

Final iteration tested by the better half and passed the arthritic hand test. All print quality glitches ironed out to an acceptable standard. Once I have a few printed for consistency testing and stock, I will put it in the classified. If anyone wants any other cap designs included, please send me your cap as a template or good dimensions and photos. Looking at the other cap designs I’ve seen, this one is the only one that really is in desperate need of this tool.
