I did an oil & filter change today and whilst having a poke around I discovered the westegate rod / valve appears to be stuck.
I can get a pair of molegrips on it but wondered how much it should move side to side ?
Also, if it doesn't move by hand, how much wellie with a hammer can I give it ?
For today I gave it a spray with WD40 but I'll try moving it tomorrow.
TIA

I am flattered you chose to use one of my original photos.
Put an open ended spanner over the spindle to the vertical pin.
GENTLY try moving left to right increasing effort bit by bit if seized.
I trust you jest with mention of hammer o_O

OK, I'll leave the hammer in the toolbox
I save lots of pics I think one day maybe useful, today one came good (y)
Thanks for your efforts.
Is it likely to free up easily ?
What can I do if it won`t move ?

Yes it should move by hand. Gentle pressure, spanner as suggested or Mole grips on the shaft (you were there already) just to get some movement, not to wrench it round, and then by hand. Releasing or penetrating fluid should do the trick it will be moving in the morning.
Keep us up to date.

Give it a good soaking with penetrating oil and leave it for a day or two if it's still stiff, it will loosen but don't force it as you don't want to break it ... let the oil do the work.

Well after soaking in penatrating oil I gave it a wiggle and it does move now but not much.
Partly because it was difficult to get much leverage on it and partly because it seemed to be on a strong spring.
Should that be enough ? or do I need to go back under for another try ?

Best bet is to drive it and see if it performs okay, once the engine's up to temperature it might release a bit more on it's own.

I thought this was going to be another thread on letting your grey waste dribble out somewhere inappropriate!

That's good. The spring keeps it closed. When did you last drive it?
Yesterday to get it up to temp before oil change, and periodically over winter.
I think it`s probably been stuck for a long time, maybe as long as I`ve had it, 5 years.
I often wondered about performance, but just put it down to large vehicle etc and I had nothing to compare it to.
I`ll take it for a drive tomorrow, maybe I`ll see a bit more umph, lol

Thanks folks !

Give it full throttle and high revs, It will let you know if it is reluctant.
Glad you got it free 👍

Make sure you fasten your seat belt properly and grip the steering wheel tightly as you'll be flying! :giggle:

He's gonna be really, really surprised by just how fast it will go now and then kick himself for not sorting it years ago!
