Are you pushing the handle in or trying to turn it?

Hi Martin
I tried both, believe this is a slide valve so push in to close, pull to open ?
While away used bowl from sink.

It's a sliding gate valve and is leaking because the piece that contains the seal and holds it in position is broken.

If you take out the four screws you should be able to take it all apart and possibly repair it,but it may be easier just to replace it due to it's age. Something like this.

Do have to have that arrangement?
Simply fit a plastic tap on the end of the drain pipe that easily reached
Blank off all that gate valve assembly.

As long as it's not leaking out of the broken valve housing which looks like a distinct possibility.
Must learn to read better as you say after blanking off the valve!

You can buy large plastic tap's on eBay. What size is the waste pipe?
