Hi, my 2015 Hymer has just developed an issue with the factory/dealer fitted Waeco pure sine wave MSI 1812T inverter.
When the van is plugged into the mains and the inverter switched off it is making an intermittent clicking/taping noise, when the inverter is switched on the noise increases in volume.
The internal sockets work when the inverter is switched on (both with or without mains hook up) however when the inverter is switched off and the mains hook up is connected the internal sockets do not work.
Also the noise stops when the mains cable is removed. The inverter is 5 years old but has had very little use

Any thoughts or help would be really welcome
Thanks

It appears your sockets are all connected to the inverter ONLY.
If you want sockets when on hookup you also need the inverter turned on meaning the battery is taking an unneccesary hammering and the charger will be working hard to replace the inverter amps used.
Not a good idea in my opinion when switch over relays are available.
Clicking.... No idea.

Hi pappajohn, thanks for the quick reply, the sockets used to work without the inverter being switched on, normally the only time i would switch on the inverter is if i was wild camping. I suspect there is some kind of switch in the inverter that is not working but i have very little understanding of how it works and have reached the extremities of my knowledge/competence!!

The inverter may have an inbuilt change over relay which could be what you hear but if it was switching in and out the sockets would also switch on and off.
Think you're going to need a sparky to get a proper look, not much you can do on a forum but guess at the fault.

Just had a look and yes, that inverter has mains priority which means when it's on and you connect to hookup the inverter automatically shuts down.

My pals hymer had the same problem and found a trip switch on the inverter.

Hi Brian, same fault here. We are 99% certain it was caused by a spike in the Spanish mains while on Campsite. Worked fine until thunderstorm, after that priority relay would not work. Inverter works fine so by juggling the in out plugs we can get what we want if a bit messy!
I wondered how far you got, no dealer/agent/even the manufacturer seem to want to be bothered with it.
If all else fails I will build an external auto switchover relay but would be nice to repair if anyone else had found the faulty part.

HI LM.....yeah sounds exactly the same fault. I have just dropped it off at Sellweb in Tamworth. When i explained the fault to them they seemed confident they will be able to repair it. Hopefully they will be able to inspect it on Monday morning and let me know the diagnosis.....i will keep you posted

Hi LM

got my inverter back from Sellweb today fixed and working as it should, the 240v switching board and relay had blown, repaired for £75+vat. I’m happy with that as a decent replacement is north of £750.
The engineer said it was possibly due to a surge or spike in the 240v feed.
Sellweb specialise in repairing inverters and electronic equipment.
http://www.sellweb.co.uk/ well worth a phone call as they also do a postal service

There is also a re settable "fuse" on the 1812T (The "T" means it has an inbuilt transfer switch)

If the inverter is overloaded it pops, and the "T" bit is disabled, but the unit will continue to work on "inverter mode"

Hi Flairy. We have the same inverter problem. Did Sellweb sort yours out please? We have our Carthago booked into Southdowns in Portsmouth next week, to check the electrics and/or inverter.

This inverter has a design fault. There are times when for a moment the inverter is running and the mains comes on.. At that point the switching relay has two sets of 230vAC to switch between. If these two AC supplies are in phase synchronity then the voltage across the relay will be zero. If however the two phases are 180 degrees out of phase then the voltage across the relay contacts will be 2 X 240v. Or 480VAC.
The relays are not rated at this voltage. In all depends on the phase difference when the relay is operated, and that you have no control over. I sorted mine with a 20A contactor rated at 690VAC.
I did it the Cliveway.
