We had our honeymoon in California in one in 1991. It was lent to me by a friend who must have wanted a mechanical renovation done on it as it turned out to be a stuttering tour of garages of California! Hideously unreliable, noisy, slow, thirsty and freezing cold at night in April in Yosemite in the snow. It didn't put us off; we bought a Bedford CF Dormobile on our return and never looked back! BUT, £100k ++ for one?

5 years, feel free to ask me about the Carado!!
Driven one when I was a learner driver and seen one on fire and one post fire....I think it was cracked petrol hoses that were responsible for the spontaneous combustion. Very much get the feeling the article is part of the hype for selling this rust bucket. If it isnt a rust bucket then there is probably no original bodywork left!

Like them or loathe them the truth is if you have a good one you are sitting on good cash.
I bought mine 16 years ago for £2,250.00 and sold it last year to first buyer for £20,000.00.
Martha was garaged and kept dry.
You have to remember they were the must have vehicle of their time. They were considered luxury vehicles.

16 years since restarting
I met a bloke in South Molton that had rebuilt a split screen one & the only original bits left were front /back bulkheads. No interior & he was driving into the garage sat on an old tyre . Said he was in for 59k ,so far.Stunning paint job.
Then this year I came across an early original split screen with the double side opening doors on the harbour at Maldon in Essex. Quite tidy as unrestored & with only some slight rust around the rear.

Yes but now this http://www.motorhomes.co.uk/motorhomes-for-sale/hymer/b-class-sl/duo-mobil/1474/ is considered a luxury vehicle for a £100k and the VW looks like a shed.

My mates got a "splitty" He can only use campsites with all facilities, or come with us using lots of our stuff, he has no room for his own so he has to tow a trailer.
Wouldn,t do for us.

To think I bought my first VW split screen, a 1966 with Devon conversion for £250 and it had a years MOT.(y)

Hindsite is a great thing I bought a new vw type 2 Danbury in 1972 for £1300, but I could have bought a 1966 AC Cobra for the same money. Would be nice to step back in time.

Scene tax, great if you got one, not so great if you want one.
