Which makes Clives point quite sensible
Really?
On the assumption that the vehicle is fitted with standard plates in the normal position front and rear, that is meeting all requirements.
Having numbers on a roof is irrelevant to any rules regarding display of VRM.
I really would love to see something that said this is not permitted beyond being told to "read the regulations" :D

Indeed for ANPR's, but what about other situations where size is the key and the fact that is on the roof can prove the true identity of the MH, which is why my reg is on our roof.
Can ANPR cameras even read a VRM that's not on a vertical surface which they are designed to do?

Check the vehicle regs for the allowed positions. text size and type etc for uk number plates.

The cynic in me tells me that if plod on the ground don't take much, if any action over stolen vehicles, plod in the air aren't going to show much interest either ?
Or am I just too cynical ?
You might not believe it, but the majority of ‘plod’ as you refer to them, are pretty diligent and get a buzz out of detecting crime. Sadly, the police get judged on the actions of a small minority of bad apples.
