We're heading to the Vosges in the next couple of days (currently in Nancy).

Hope to do some hiking. In particular we fancy the Sentier de Roches, but it appears that dogs are now banned. Any thoughts, or other hiking suggestions?

Also suggested places to overnight? Aires or wild camping preferably. Like the look of the aire at Plainfaing. Anyone been?

We really liked the circuit around Lac Blanc, the parking behind Les Terraces Du Lac Blanc has good views water EHU 11 euro.

We especially liked the walks around Col Des Bagenellws, good walks, the ridge on the North side was especially good, views caves. We stayed in the car park at the Col, the views are stunning, they even put tables out for you! Auberge 500m up the track serves good mountain food.

Hope this helps

If you need a site for laundry etc, camping Du Lac at the east end of Du Longemer is good and 11.5 Eu, inc EHU, there are several supermarkets and many shops in Gerardmer. Also good walks from the site, many cycle routes.

Thanks for all your comments Neilh - Staying tonight on the aire at Saint-Die des Vosges. 8€ including 16a EHU, free super fast WiFi, fresh water, and waste disposal.

Planning on going up into the mountains tomorrow. We're taking some of your suggestions on board. Many thanks.

Ps. Photo attached to counter the "all aires are horrible carparks" comments on some of other threads on here at the moment. Loads of space, grass and hard standing, trees and hedging. (We're even partaking in some "camping behaviour")!

Looks like you've got good weather. Wish we were there, but got to work for a year or two.
You'll enjoy the car park at Col Du Bagenelles, if yoiu take the track up the left hand side of the valley (as viewed) there's a v large rock with some steel handles, if you climb up there's 270 degree view of the valley, I think i was a look out in WW2/1

Neilh - We overnighted yesterday at Les Terraces Du Lac Blanc as you suggested and walked around both Lac Blanc and Lac Noir.

Today we've hiked the Sentier de Roches. Bit of a killer. About 650m total ascent including hanging off metal rails on some ledges and a tunnel blasted through the rock.

Was hoping to upload some pics, but 4g a bit flakey up here!

I'd recognize 'Miserable Dog' anywhere.

Enjoy!!!

We were in the Vosges a couple of weeks ago. A night at the parking area on La Grand Ballon is worth doing. I wrote it up starting at post #60 here:

Hiked to the the top of the Ballon d'Alsasce in the Hautes Vosges. Unfortunately low cloud descended and could see nothing from the panoramic viewpoint. Needless to say we didn't waste a Euro in the telescope!

There was an interesting monument nearby dedicated to the hundreds of landmine sweepers who lost their lives clearing the German mines left after the end of WW2.
