Hi, my son has just bought camper van, a 2020. Does anyone know of insurers for this. He is nearly 50, so not a youngster.

There are a number of established insurers of VW campers. I've used Safeguard and Brentacre myself. I'm now with A-Plan Thatcham because I need business insurance on my van which the other two either wouldn't do or would only do with unworkable caveats. Safeguard included AA cover, which was handy on my last van which once had to be recovered.
Is your son's van registered as a 'Motor Caravan' on the V5? It's no problem if not, but make sure that the insurer knows that it is a campervan, and not a panel van, that is being insured, and make sure they're aware of ALL modifications, even things which don't seem very flash. It's well worth paying slightly more for an Agreed Value, but not all insurers will do this on all vans.

Thanks for info, will pass this on to him.

Also worth a look on the VW forum for insurance info . As said agreed value is the way to go.

I have used A-Plan quite a bit over the years on three different VW self-builds. They are VW specialist insurers and understand that market well (and the fact that VWs always fetch a premium and need cover accordingly and not get lumped in with a Transit or Fiat self-build)

+1 for Brentacre; they are happy with upping the value as he adds bits without handling charges, and no deadline; though I during conversion I was only insuring for the "cash spent" rather than a notional value (which IMHO it does not achieve until totally finished).

All passed to son and advised him to join MHF

I’m with Brentacre with my 71 plate T6.1 and at 1 month old I had a bump which was my fault and Brentacre were brilliant, my van was repaired to as new but I was dreading my renewal premium and what a surprise I had in November when my premium came through with only a £50 increase.
