Just seen an ad about a cheap language translater (£25 ) .You choose the language and speak into it your language and it speaks out in chosen language. Anyone tried one?

Get an app on your phone, it’s more convenient. iTranslate is very good apparently and works on both IOS and Android equally well.

Sorry Chris51 I didnt understand a word of what you said, but yes please send cheque for £25 to my chosen charity ....CAMRA:D

google translate despite being married to my dearly beloved Spanish wife I use google translate for some of the more obscure names she calls me :blusher:

JJ I think has the chepeast one. Mind you he's a specialist to find the cheapest things on the market. He whispers his query in my ear, press a button (....No.... Won't tell you which button, none of your business!) and gets the translation right away. He can even ask different ways to say the same thing,: nice one, rude one, colloquial one.

He's got in French but also about the same in Spanish ... and if really in need of it, in German.

Note: No battery nor wire required.... I'm permently switched ON;)(y)

Just instal the Google translate app for free onto a smartphone. Not only can you speak into it and type into it you can scan documents and it will read and translate them. Great for menus when you are not sure.

I agree re Google Translate. My French is reasonable but I still use it occasionally and I think it’s very good. No need to pay.

Sorry to say this but, I do find google translate to be probably the worst translator out there when it should be the best.

We us app called SayHi works great here in Spain, but not just for Spanish. We have used it for French and German. It works both ways so spanish person speaks in spanish and it translates it to english and other way round. We leave it on the table and have a good "chin" wag.

Yes my phone has one it’s called Google Translate, choose any language and hit the double microphone button, say what you want and she repeats it in the chosen language.

As a bonus, there is a camera icon, click this, choose what language you want to change eg French to English, point your camera at French text, could be a road sign, menu, love letter or whatever and by pure magic your screen turns the words to English but still on whatever you were looking at ?

It has never let us down in France, Spain, Portugal, Italy or Germany. May not be a perfect translation but we have always understood the gist of it. We download the languages we need so it works even when we don't have an internet connection.

I am always amazed , the amount of people , nearly all now, who have a smart phone and havnt got a clue what it can do and only use them as a phone.
No slight on the op there are thousands out there who are wasting money on a phone, sat, nav, maps, translater, games, social media , banking , and not useing it to it's full potential.

Agree to some extent , but all eggs in one basket , trying to be master of everything doesn't come off , eg cameras take better pics , etc .

How many times have we had folks with good cameras say they don't bother with them anymore, and you have to be very dedicated to photography to carry stuff around you can manage without, in my situation which admitadly doesn't call for anything hi tec, since I have had a six inch screen on a phone I don't use anything else , computer, laptop, camera, just one small thing does the lot.
For phone photos ,see Northernraider s excellent thread.

BUT if you lose your phone or it fails like my new iPhone 7 plus did in France one year and you were so used to relying on it for all the things you mentioned, then like me you would be STUFFED. They sent me a new phone to the campsite and the wifi there was not good enough to reload all my Apps and data, I left the campsite and didn't realise the phone was still upgrading itself and got a bill for £400 plus from 3 mobile for data use, they have fair use policy and I argued that getting my phone back in working order was fair use, they refunded me! BUT some people may not be so lucky with other carriers, SO be careful putting all your eggs in one basket, I still do by the way but that's the risk I take and know about it, as long as you realise (y)

I am on Vodafone, unlimited everything.
If you have an android phone with a Google account everything is automatic from one phone or tablet to another, everything Ido on here automatically gets on to my laptop and if needs be I just go to that.
