Vodafone roaming

I am considering signing up for vodafone roaming. My only issue is that their fair use policy seems to be too restrictive. According to my research you are only allowed 30 consecutive days roaming. We typically spend 60 days on a French trip so it seems as though it would not work for us.

Anyone here got experience of roaming data with vodafone?

I have had a Vodafone 2 year contract for over a year now, we spend around 10 months of the year in the EU, mostly Portugal and use the connection for streaming TV etc.

What I did on the advice of BreweryDave was to keep a record of an online conversation which promised not to apply the restriction, it has worked so far.

We both have the Vodaphone 100 gig for £20 a month on our phones and a 50 gig deal for the mifi and all with no data roaming restrictions.
We have been in Europe for the last year and a half and the only additional charge we have incurred was when we connected to the Albanian network which is not part of the Vodaphone fee roaming area.
We also get a much better signal than when we were with 3.

I live on the rock also and just use three mobile so I am roaming all the time had no problems with it. Been using it over two years.

We were in France and Spain for 9weeks from April this year no problem at all and excellent signal just renewed my contract

We've used our 10gb monthly allowance throughout Europe over the last three years and never had a problem. You may need to check the terms in detail as may be something new that would affect new subscribers.

We are currently in roaming terrority and have used 32Gb in the past month, when signing up we were told no roaming restrictions and that seems to be the case, backed up by regular texts from Vodafone saying don’t worry it’s all included.

We've been using 3 for a few years too, mostly fine. When we are in our van though on a long trip we use quite a lot of data. Last month I was charged over £80 extra for data and looks like similar for the current month. That's why I'm asking.

Is that because you have exceeded your data limits rather than roaming charges.

As others have said Vodafone have some excellent data deals which come up as offers occasionally, usually just after you have renewed which happened to us but will do some serious negotiating when this contract ends next August.

Yes. 3 have a data limit of 19gb pm. They cant or wont increase that. Dont know what you mean by a roaming charge.

Unless you've already done so I would suggest getting a cap put on your data usage, then you can manage any extra data when you need it rather than getting a shock bill at the end. Vodafone send automated texts when we're down to our last 1gb and then again at 250mgb, we can then choose to pay for an add on or if only a couple of days until new month just not use the data on that phone. Normally paying for an add on will be cheaper than the charges for continued use.

I think Vodafone charge £6.50 per 250mgb over your monthly amount but it's £10 for additional 2gb. £10 is expensive for just 2gb but sometimes I feel we need the data we have to pay for it.

Others will always have their own preferences but we've always used Vodafone across Europe and even had a signal in remote parts of Scotland where nothing else normally works.

Can recommend Vodafone for use in Europe and further afield. No restrictions when we were in Greece for 2 months this summer. We have a monthly 100gb sim and used more than the 19gb mentioned above. Streaming Netflix etc was no problem. Much better speed than when we had a SIM from Three.

Yes. 3 have a data limit of 19gb pm. They cant or wont increase that. Dont know what you mean by a roaming charge.

In theory the provider sets a limit on free roaming, as your original question, outside this period additional charges for roaming may be incurred.

There is nowhere on Vodafone's website or fair usage policy that states 30 days, so I'm not sure where that information has come from. What they say is:

"Use of our services while in our Europe Zone (excluding the UK), Roam-free or Roam-further destinations is intended for temporary, periodic travel such as holidays and short breaks. "

All other networks specifically state the '60 in 120' rule, which means that more than 50% of your usage needs to be in the UK within a rolling 120 day period. Vodafone are the only network not to reference this specifically anywhere other than their 'Roam Further' (outside of the EU) plans.

I'm not aware first hand of anyone being cut off for extended use of a Vodafone SIM abroad, it's also incredibly rare for other networks to enforce this as well - but not unheard of. Something that is a hard stop and is enforced is the data cap, if applicable.

Things could change shortly, but if that means a change to your contract terms to enforce you could walk away without penalty (see Gov.UK Roaming Brexit / Ofcom).

The best value Vodafone SIM is presently the Mobile Broadband 50GB SIM for £30pm on a 30-day rolling contract. The 'Unlimited' deals are 'Limited' to 25GB abroad - which could be fine depending on your intended usage.

I read in the new terms of the 3 new "Unlimited" range of Vodafone offers announced at the end of August 2019 that a "Fair use policy" applies which reduces the roaming data allowance down to less than half the nominal value:-

Roaming data on all unlimited data plans: capped at 25GB per month in inclusive roaming & £6/day roaming destinations. Terms, destinations & verification at vodafone.co.uk/mobile/global-roaming

I still have the old contract where there wasn't any such 25gb/month capping and am resisting their attempts to move me over to one of the new Unlimited plans.

I have a 100Gb Vodafone sim which we used in France and Spain this year. Used about 35Gb in the first couple of weeks in July (month refresh) then 70 up to the end of August without issue.
I did notice that Vodafone cap overseas usage if you have an unlimited package which appears to be a touch perverse.

While O2 don't limit your data use, it's widely reported that they enforce a traffic management policy which means that the speed reduces to the point of almost being unusable before your data allowance is exhausted.

"O2 Pay Monthly Customers roaming within The EU may experience limited throughput of up to 1Mbit/s for data services during seasonal traffic peaks, which could slow some services down "


There are many references to such/complaints on their forums/Twitter etc and we have found this first hand in some prior testing - hence we don't recommend O2 for use abroad. In addition, their consumer Mobile Broadband plans don't function at all abroad - quite how they get away with that I'm not sure.

I am with O2 and have been for years, presently in Spain. I have never had any issue with my 50 gig usage. Last month down to nothing day before renewal, speed was as normal watching I player and other tv programmes. So we n my car I have not had any difficulty

When roaming you don’t need to stick with the network partner of your home network, go to the network settings turn of automatic network connection and change the provider if the connection is slow.
That’s the point of roaming.
A while back I think it was the home secretary brought up the prospect of roaming within the U.K. to allow you to connect to the best network to avoid black spots.
The networks dismissed the plan as they said it would stifle network improvements.

What do you describe as being 'consecutive use'? If this is time spent abroad, see my post a bit higher up by clicking here.

We have a 110GB SIM at the moment available for our customers, all of which can be used abroad for £15pm.

Hi, we had your system fitted just before we left and the fitters told us to go direct to Vodafone for an alternative sim to the 3 one provided. We did and explained what we wanted - including data use abroad - the guy told us roaming was limited to 50gb but I thought that would be ok, since leaving UK we have found that the “unlimited” package has in fact a 25gb limit per month. Re consecutive days I was referring to the OP and saying I hadn’t seen anything in the fair use that stated consecutive days.

Tbh I’ve just changed my IDMobile on my phone to their unlimited with a fair use policy of at least 8months a year use in uk - £23 a month at the moment and I’ll use it as a hotspot and cancel the Vodafone when home. Will contact adam when back about a better deal for the mifi

Be aware that there are 3 levels of 4g on Vodafone.
SIM only is £20pm for 2mps, £23pm for 10mps and £30pm for whatever speed is available through your phone. 25gb per month europe
