We are considering spending a month touring Scotland, the only really free time available due to motorsport commitments is March, does the panel think that would be a stupid idea? ;)

There are pluses and minuses but if it is the only time you can come then its a good time. Prepare for anything weather wise, it could be warm, cold, wet dry, freezing or snowing, but if you come prepared then there should be no problems. Remember there is no such thing as bad weather only bad clothing. Check if campsites and visitor attractions are open as many wont open until Easter weekend.

Thanks, hadn't thought about the opening times scenario! Will do some searching on that :)

We tour Scotland all year round, easier for us as we are already there of course. Just be prepared for any weather, it's nice at any time.

On the plus side no midges - we are thinking of going in June but are mighty scared of them.

Edit better to it on the midges

More than toes wet now!
As Norman and Sue say pack the proper clothing and you'll be fine.
As a community service from a local just a short guide on what to pack for all eventualities, the highest temperature during the last week in March in Scotland reached nearly24C :xThumb::xThumb::xThumb:in Aboyne meanwhile about half an hour along the road in Braemar the lowest temperature for the last week in March hit -17.2C!:eek::eek:
So, providing you've got the 45ft long articulated trailer in tow loaded with the gear required you'll be fine!:xThumb:
And jumping in before the doom and gloom gang, There'll be nae midges aboot.:xThumb:
Go on yi know it makes sense.

We take summer and winter clothing, but last year we never wore our winter coats.

Hi.
All of the above, four seasons in a day mid summer,so enjoy. There is a Funster on here, who was running a CC or C&cc site up there, pictures looked out of this world, have stayed at "Bunree ?" as it was called then....Magic. Worked up there over one Christmas, between Cupar Fife and St. Andrews, never missed a day to the weather, very cold but clear blue skies. Locals say it has a "Mini/Micro climate" Its where the "Berries" grow,Rasps etc. Lovely people, but like yourself, checking on opening times is the last thought, enjoy.

We toured last March and are going again March 17. This will be our 4 th time at that time of year and have always had a great time. We always go expecting bad weather but up to now have been pleasantly surprised. May see you on the road!

Top Tip:

To cope with the problem of winter coat frozen solid to wardrobe wall, carry a Big Generator and and industrial grade Hair Dryer.

@pops .... not been off the mainland yet, I think we will keep an eye on the weather this year and if it looks settled book a ferry or two.

If it's the only time you've got, it's the ONLY idea. Touring Scotland is an experience not to be missed. There are plenty of camping spots available all year and as for tourist attractions etc, don't worry - in Scotland (as so many other places) the best bits are free - the mountains, the lochs, the walking.....
But as others have advised, the key is to have layers of good quality outdoor clothing.
Please, do go; and I can guarantee that you WILL enjoy it.

Oh - and I've followed a snowplough clearing the road in front of us in May, so that's not too far-fetched an idea! (but it's FUN)
