We going up the west coast of Scotland next week. Can anyone recommend where we could park up for a day (or night) and catch a train or bus into Glasgow for the day. We have stopped at commuter stations outside both Edinburgh and Dublin and caught the train in.
Or is there a park and ride we could use and to stay over for the night?

Last time we were there without the motorhome one of our visits on the round robin tourist bus was the Riverside Museum. There were motorhomes parked there when we visited, looked like day visitors not overnighting. There was other public transport from there as well as the tourist bus. Here’s a link to the page, may be worth a call to them as parking changes on 1st June. https://www.glasgowlife.org.uk/museums/venues/riverside-museum

I can recommend parking next to the park n ride Gartcosh Interchange off M73. Area is very quiet during the night and no trains run. Good safe location to overnight. Train 20 min to Glasgow.

You can stop for the night at the Motorhome and Caravan Club site at Strathclyde Park. Short taxi ride to train station to Glasgow central approx 20 minutes. On specific days mini bus from the site into town.

Or choose a site at Ayr or Troon and get train in ... that way you combine seaside with city.

Well it started of looking reasonable at £12 a night but then quickly went down hill.

Do some of you people really pay £35 + --- to park your van up for the night -----for ONE night.

I'll be checking out Sandras Park and Ride.

More than toes wet now!
Hampden Park and Ride is generally for cars and wouldn't want to park our motorhome there.
Think you can park and (maybe) overnight at Pollok Country Park. Not that far to Pollokshaws West station.
Could be worth a look?

Edit - Oh, and if you don't mind being further out of Glasgow you can park \ overnight behind the Tourist Information Office in Balloch (Loch Lomond). It's across the road from the train station with a couple of trains an hour into Glasgow.
There's also a pub and great chippie across the road!

What would be the problem parking a MoHo there? There looks like you can back over the grass around the edges as long as there's no height barrier.

Glasgow is difficult, we use the C&MC site at Ayr. I know Glasgow well and would not park up anywhere in the city, including Hampden.

I would have some potential security concerns. It's right next to the national football stadium.

Is Glasgow such a lawless place then? - should we just not bother?
Glasgow is a great city however, like most, it has it better \ poorer areas.

Where about in Glasgow are you looking to visit \ see?

Why would that be a problem? Is it particularly rough around Hamden?

It's just that we have visited most major cities but not glasgow and as my grandfathers were born there I thought I ought to take a look. It has a good long history so I imagine there must be some very nice old buildings.

Where should we be heading for?

Where should we be heading for?

Literally hundreds of places worth visiting!
Kelvingrove Art Galleries and Museum
Riverside Museum (walking distance from KAG&M)
Glasgow University and Museum (walking distance from KAG&M)
Botanic Gardens
Cathedral and visitors centre,
Provends Lordship (oldest house in Glasgow and opposite the Cathedral)
The Necropolis (behind the Cathedral)
MacIntosh building, The School of Art (but still undergoing restoration following major fire)
Won't mention The Burrell as it's closed for refurbishment until 2020!
City Chambers, George Square and Merchant City
Glasgow Green and People's Palace
Central Station (if the tours of the hidden platforms are on)
you can hop on and off the City Tourist bus that will take you passed most of all of them (and others).

Worth looking at. It's a great site, very clean and well kept, secure entrance gate. !0-12 minute walk to the railway station for trains into the city centre for £3 to £4 with a very frequent service. https://www.thetrainline.com/train-times/stepps-to-glasgow-queen-street

I stayed there for a week a couple of years ago visiting family, friends and touring. It's ideally placed for central Scotlands' fantastic motorway network whether you want to go north, south, east or west. There have been significant changes to the network in recent years so make sure that your satnav is up to date.
Glasgow is a large city and like all large cities anywhere in the world it has got some areas which are better than others. It's a great place to visit, lots to see and do and Glaswegians are a very friendly lot.(y)
