We too visited Vietnam during Tet. I learned to say happy new year,
“ chuc mung nam moi” and the locals loved it. We were invited to a staff party in one strange hotel on Mekong river, by 8 pm we were the only ones left standing, they just can’t drink alcohol.
Enjoy Your visit.

We were thinking of a visit to Vietnam, but got talking to some people who said street crime was endemic out there and they did not feel safe, they got robbed twice. Is that correct ?

We loved Vietnam we visited 2010, very interesting history, didn't feel threatened at any time. Travelled totally independently.

Sorry to hear about your friends. To give a different picture, we spent a few weeks there when travelling in 05. Brilliant place and had an amazing time as have other friends who have visited subsequently. Spent time in south, on an island and travelling up north. Super friendly people who couldn’t be more welcoming or helpful. Had no issues with crime nor did any other travellers or holiday makers we met. So many great places to visit - well worth going.

As with any foreign travel, especially to a country where wealth is at a different level to ours, ensure that you take appropriate precautions and you should be fine.
