Hi all.
I am fittign a Victron Orion Dc2Dc that works fine but I want to have the ability to turn it on and off woith a switch so it doesn't constantly try to charge the battery when the engine is running - mainly as it gets too hot and needs to cool down!

Am I right in thinking that if I take out the green jumper and replace it it with wiring to a simple on/off switch that will do what I need...?

Thanks

It sounds like it is one which looks like this, in which case yes. Remove the jumper wire and put a switch between the 2 terminals. If it is a more sophisticated B2B then as already suggested put a switch on the D+ connection.

I understood that the Orion throttled the output when it got warm? So the output is reduced. It shouldn't cook itself to death.

I chose the Votronic 30A DC charger because it's much more efficient than the Victron, so doesn't get as warm. Downside is I can't see it in the app like I can with the rest of my Victron gear, but I believe the Orion only tells you that it's on and that's about it, so I'm not losing much.

After reading this thread I have to ask is the Victron Orion B2B fit for purpose if its prone to over heating?

The early ones were, supposed to be sorted but still need to be mounted in a ventilated area, difficult in a Motorhome.

It isn't particularly efficient compared to some DC chargers and it's passively cooled when others have fans. After a while, the heatsink gets quite hot. It has self protection, so it will reduce output when it gets hot. So I don't believe it's dangerous. A solution is to mount it to a big metal plate, or add a fan... Or just decide for once team blue missed and buy a different product.

Remove the jumper, and wire one single wire to L terminal, I think it’s on the left. Connect that wire to a inline switch, then from switch to the D+ or ignition life.
I use same model of converter, I do not use a B2B. When there’s plenty of solar, I switch it off, and stays of from March to November as well.
Before use, power it up on input, and with a multimeter and a small flat screw driver, adjust the rotary potentiometer to your desired output voltage, then connect the output. I set mine at 13.65v and it’s pushing about 65-70% of its total output. This way it will take hrs to get hot.

Yes you can easily add the switch as above, I did in the last van.
BUT !!!! am I getting confused with MPPT, can't they be switched off in the app ? "charger enabled" in settings(thought Id discovered after I fitted the switch)
I cant check with mine for this new van as its still in the box

Yes you can switch it off using the App - or just pull out the Green connector as a fudge!
