Hi someone had recommended that I get an inverter fitted to motorhome and have recommended a

Victron Energy MultiPlus Inverter/Charger -12V 800W/35A​

People have said it’s underpowered but the guy said it would work most things but also act as a shunt if on under powered hookup from 5 amp upto 10 amp using on board battery. And will act as a battery charger when on hook up. I’m guessing it won’t run hair driers and microwave. All other battery management is victron so would fit in with that. I also need to run a cpap machine which can run off 12volt but nice to have the option

other option for a charger is a Stirling 40a battery charger. Installing a 200 ah lithium as an alternative.

cost is an issue as can’t afford the 1.5 k for a 3000 W one :-)

You need to ask yourself do you want/need an inverter and then what do you want to power with it?

Working just from the batteries (not on EHU) you are limited to 800W, which is just over 3 amps. Depending on what you want to run, that may be sufficient, but I'd think it is a bit smaller than most inverter installations. Most go for at least 1000W, which will just about run a coffee machine or a hair dryer.

The 'Power Assist' function works by letting you set a limit to the EHU input. It can then add the inverter power to boost the total power. For example, on a 5A hookup, set the limit to 5A, and you can use 5 + 3 = 8A by adding in the inverter power (from the batteries). When the load drops, the Multiplus recharges the battery automatically.

Most inverters will not work while the EHU is connected, but Victron Multiplus are designed to work in conjunction with a hookup supply.

It's a big advantage to have the inverter and charger together as one system. It's quite flexible, you can turn on just the inverter or just the charger if you want, instead of both.

Hi auto thanks for the reply it is more the charging and ac drop function that caught my eye so I’ll have to have a think trouble is this unit is at the top of my budget really hi hum

It’s to small, 800va is aroximate 640w and the fans will scream even on 3/4 load. You want a multiplus 1200va at least or 1600va. I just replaced my 1600va with a 2000va.
Wired in correctly does wonders. It charges both batteries from ehu, trickles the starter from leisure( same as battery master), it assists with weak grid, and low stand by consumption if you forget it sometimes on.

800w inverter is low , no hairdryer or microwave etc like you say.
If you already have other victorn gear you will prob already have the shunt/bluetooth mechanism

I didnt bother and went seperates route if you are installing 200ah of lithium, I just felt that way its easier to replace one item if problems occur
Ive just done the same 200ah lithium, then
Victron dc to dc
victron 100 w 30 mppt
victorn batter charger
400w solar
but this invertor Amazon product ASIN B07G2Z34BSthey do a 2000w one but I do have some power hungry things now and again so for the price difference I went with this.

Ive not finished adding the dc to dc properly yet but everything else works a treat

Which is what I advised him yesterday 😉 Best set up on the market.

My camper is quite big, and uses domestic products rather than 12V ones, The large TV’s all synchronised with a HDMI distribution unit with ARC control for the surround sound for example

The ability, thanks to the Victron Multiplus and Lithium battery set up just to ‘use’ everything normally is fantastic

Yes my wife uses a domestic hairdryer, for ten minutes a day, the rest of the time the inverter just makes life easy, wherever you are

Agree, I run all victron gear on my house to. The house is not connected to the grid. It has a multiplus 2 5kva, with 8,8 kwp panels dc coupled. I did had a fronius 3,6kw but took it out.

I'm pretty sure the 800 quoted is the maximum you could supply to the sockets in your van. So, even on a 16A hookup, you could only use a bit less than 3A.

You need a bigger one.

As above, it's not Watts that victron quote.

It can supply more than 800va when on ehu only. If ehu allows it ca pass through 16a of power. Otherwise in inverting mode, limited to 800va 640w respectively.

Don't have to use top brand names to achieve a good result. Nothing wrong with Victron except the price! I use 2 off 35A PSU's so my batteries can charge upto 70A. on hookup although i only had to use hookup 3 times so far this winter. These chargers are also powered from a 2000w inverter under the drivers seat connected to the starter battery so this become my B2B solution. At idle my AGM batteries charge around 60A. SO 60A@14.4v=860W is enough to charge my batteries in just under an hour even with no solar.
I have 2 full size solar panels on the roof so 550 watts thru a 60A MPPT charge controller. My hab inverter is 3000/6000w peak so it can run anything. I have a 240v undercounter fridge freezer rewired so it turns off my inverter when the compressor is off. It uses just 330wH over 24h. My typical daily usage is around 0.6kWh per day. This includes the lights, 700w toaster, mini QT microwave oven, 22" TV, quad 360 security camera system, PTZ cab camera, MiFi GSM booster, 8 USB's, water pump and 5kw diesel heater. Plus the usual phones, ipads and laptop use and the setup copes extremely well. I just use it as if i was at home but off grid.

Alternator at idle can put out so much power? Voltage gets to 14,4 at around 3k rpm at idle it puts out around 13v, the amps I don’t know but I guess a max 2-300w if is a 100a alternator.
The PSU Is nice but you have to nanny the charge as is a single voltage.

Are you saying you invert 12VDC to 220VAC to run a charger to convert 220 VAC back down to 12VDC?
