I have 2 x 90a Exide gel batteries being charged by 2 x 120w solar. They go through a Victron Mppt 100/30 & I also have a Victron smart battery sense attached.

However, there is a difference of .25w between them.

It might not seem a lot but when you're paranoid about whether your solars are working properly (just installed another 120w solar panel) and not and not wanting to ruin the batteries, .25w is a lot?

Thanks Lenny, I'm monitoring as you advised but haven't had consistent sun to get a good estimate. I've had 2.1a today but that still doesn't seem great. I'm going to get upbthrough the skylight tomorrow to check as you suggested. (y)

From the many regular posts from the worried well about solar and battery charging I've come to the conclusion that it's due to owners having too much information.

Never mind solar panels, Vitrons, B2B's etc. it seems to me that the simplest solution to worries about batteries and charging is Prozac.

Could it be that the MPPT is temperature compensating based on info from the Smart Sense?

I don't know, perhaps that's the reason? Having too much info does make me paranoid, whereas before if things stopped working I'd think "oh shit"....human nature makes me acceptbthe higher reading but you may be right about realn ime temperature fluctuation.

The .25w is either a typo , or a mistake. Batt sense reads only temp and volts, not wats. If voltage at batt sense is higher by .25v compared to the controller, that’s your voltage drop from battery post to regulator, that means cable and connections are taxing you 0,25v.

Why are you worrying about your Solar working? its winter in the UK and the sun is low, so unless you have them angled and tracking the sun, you may as well forget them until spring. Driving to the shops for an hour will put more into your batteries (assuming you have a b2b fitted) than Solar all day.

Not sure if you can setup a ve smart network with the smart battery sense or not but with the shunt you can and it uses the shunt voltage across the network to compensate for any voltage drop

It was volts I was talking about and I'm trying yo harvest as much all day sun as I can in a warmer location. Dave, I'm afraid you lost me, that's how technical I'm not

Login into your smart sense with victron connect hit the little gear cog in the top right hand of the screen you should then see ve smart networking at the bottom of the list if it is available. Open this up and then create your own network then do the same in your mppt and join that to the network you created for the smart sense if I am right your smart sense will broadcast the voltage and temp across the network (that's how it works for a smart shunt)

Perhaps the monitoring devices are using more power than the solar panels can produce at this time of year.🙂

Thanks Dave 👍

I agree with Spriddler on this... too much information is indeed counter productive and can lead to sleepness nights with worry..👍👍

I'm not into all this fancy stuff but have solar and batteries similar to yours with a Chinese controller and a Chinese inverter, and they both have a digital thingy on them, and very rarely read the same, but the batteries are nearly always around 13 v even through this last cold snap have been the same for around three years now.

One last question then I'm done with this sun and energy malarky....

Do these charging settings look about right for 2 x Exide ES9000 gel batteries?

Did you forget something?
