Victron Blue Smart IP22 AGM?

Just bought this and all the posts I read said suitable for AGM but on opening the box printed on the side of the charger it say Lead acid and Lithium only, so I called 12 volt planet and I get assured it it suitable, so the question is it?

I have the 30 amp one for charging two 95 amp AGM it will be fine.

Adaptive 6-stage charge algorithm: test - bulk – absorption - recondition – float – storage
The Blue Smart Charger features a microprocessor controlled ‘adaptive’ battery management. The adaptive feature will automatically optimize the charging process relative to the way the battery is being used.
Storage Mode: less maintenance and aging when the battery is not in use
The storage mode kicks in whenever the battery has not been subjected to discharge during 24 hours. In the storage mode float voltage is reduced to 2,2V/cell (13,2V for a 12V battery) to minimize gassing and corrosion of the positive plates. Once a week the voltage is raised back to the absorption level to ‘equalize’ the battery. This feature prevents stratification of the electrolyte and sulfation, a major cause of early battery failure.
Also charges Li-ion (LiFePO4) batteries
LiFePO4 batteries are charged with a simple bulk – absorption – float algorithm.
NIGHT and LOW setting
When in NIGHT or LOW mode, the output current is reduced to max. 50% of the nominal output and the charger will be totally noiseless. The NIGHT mode automatically ends after 8 hours. The LOW mode can be ended manually.
Protected against overheating
Output current will reduce as temperature increases up to 50°C, but the Blue Smart Charger will not fail.
Eleven LEDs for status indication
Charge algorithm: TEST / BULK / ABSORPTION / RECONDITION / FLOAT / STORAGE / READY. MODE button to set: NORMAL (14,4V) / HIGH (14,7V) / RECONDITION / LI-ION.

Yes read before I bought it but assumed you could set it for AGM via bluetooth, but it doesn't so no AGM charging profile. "The question is does that matter?"

AGM is a type of lead acid. Victron Bluesmart allows all sorts of profiles. The built in profile most suitable would be the standard 14.7V "High" programme. At the full 15A bulk current setting, this is good for AGMs greater than 75Ah. If less than this capacity, you should reduce the bulk current setting.

You can make custom profiles for any sort of approximately 12V battery you like!
 
First thing to say is, Flooded, Sealed, VRLA, AGM and Gel are all technically lead-acid battery technology. The main difference in the charging profile is the 'absorption voltage', which can be 'NORMAL'(=14.4V) for Flooded, Sealed and VRLA, and 'HIGH' (=14.7V) for AGM and Gel.

Other chargers may have a timed extended absorption stage for Gel and some AGMs, but this charger doesn't seem to have that option.

Yes the guy at 12 volt said they are all lead acid, but after the posts the other day a few people had the view that without a specific AGM profile you would never fully charge it.
No worries its fitted and I did tell it to run the 14.7 bulk charge but from my reading that's just what it does for a bulk charge for any lead acid. Be interesting to see if the resting voltage is any better than the 13.9 that I got with the onboard Sargent charger and that was after 12 hours.
 
On the info Sargent sent me there is a dealer setup menu for the EC600, this is accessed by holding down one of the buttons for 10sec. On this you can turn off smart charging, then on the user menu you can select which battery gets charged. I was a bit dubious about this as in the long chat I had with them this wasn't mentioned but it appears to work, the Victron has gone on to a storage charge of 13.4 volts while the onboard Sargent charger never dropped it below 14.2

You don't want such a high voltage on float.

The Victron allows you to adjust all the parameters. I'd think 13.7V for float would be perfect.
 
The 'bulk charge' is not a definite voltage. The charger puts in its maximum current, and the voltage is whatever results from that. It will be less than the absorption voltage, especially if the battery is quite flat. During the bulk charge stage, the voltage gradually rises until it hits the absorption voltage.

At that point the battery is about 80% charged,and the absorption stage begins. The charger switches to constant voltage mode,set at the absorption voltage. The current (amps) gradually decreases, until it reaches a pre-defined limit. At that point,the charger decides the battery is fully charged, and switches to float mode.

In float mode the voltage is set to that only a tiny current (a few milliamps) flows into the battery, to just compensate for self-discharge. In motorhomes it may be set a bit higher to provide power for alarms, trackers, frost protection valve, fridge control board etc. The aim of float mode is to keep the battery fully charged, without overcharging.

Different battery technologies require different absorption and float voltages. Standard wet lead-acid for example usually requires 14.4V and 13.6V.
 
Thanks guys definitely feeling happier about the victron now, after another read of the manual there is a "high" setting which looks suitable for AGM. as below.
