Just found this on the VW Crafter (2017+) and MAN TGE - Self Build Group Facebook page.

"Just had the conversation with SV Tech on Friday about this very subject of updating the vans (2018 Crafter LWB 140bhp) to 3900Kg GVW.
Cost £312 Inc vat.
No requirement to have body type changed to "Motorcaravan" on V5 - although obviously speed limits will remain as a Van (only benefit of changing to Motorcaravan body type).
One benefit was that as the vans GVW was over 3500Kg the annual road tax would fall to £165 from it's current £210 as van would now be in the private HGV (or was it LGV?) category.
No mods required to suspension, although was advised that if semi-air suspension was fitted to the rear leaf springs increasing the rear axles payload capacity then vans GVM could go as far as 4200Kg."

Apparently not so.

When the kerfuffel was at it's height last year when DVLA were refusing to put converted PV's into the Motorcaravan section, this very subject was discussed.

From memory, DVLA said that their insistence on plonking PV.'s into a 'Van with Windows would not mean that vehicles, properly converted would not be
restricted on non motorway dual carriageways to 60mph.c

Very late to this thread, but have you had a look at Renault, only ask as before we had ours I wouldn't have chose one but I'm now converted.
High enough to stand up with ease, 35 mpg always, drives like a car.
Can't fault it really.

Anyone converted one?
Yes but s 2007 ,2.2tdci chain engine ,semi high roof mwb.
Legally converted here is a complete different scenario to UK. Mine doesn't really have any use as a works van. If doing it again it would be a van 2m longer.probably an LT

That is one than I will not touch.

I'm sure there are vans with 200k miles without a fault. But I brought s lemon 2002 2.2 movano which leaked oil then died, 2nd engine was a dud too.

No garage would touch it in the end.

Not that it wasn't a bad van ran lovely when it did run. I ran it to West Wales, Devon, Dorset, Northumberland and loved it. It's got our old caravan in it so it's a shame to be getting rid of it.

Cheers James

Exactly I must have just got a duffer 2.2 were a known weak engine tbh. 2.5 much better.

Do you have a thread or any pictures?

I've got one. L3H3 Vauxhall Movano. 150bhp 2.3. It's pretty solid. I like the plastic H3 roof.

The main issue is that there is not much room underneath for tanks. Too many braces etc. I wanted it winterised with onboard tanks anyway, but could barely fit a small underslung LPG tank under there. Not sure if being dual rear wheel made this aspect harder.

No there's no room underneath , agreed, mines even worse as it has air suspension pump and tanks underneath as well.
I have got a flatish grey waste tank under but it doesn't hold as much as I'd like.
Water tank is inside. As is gas .

Nice conversion.

I'm sure in time I'll miss the comforts of a full conversion!
