We were going away this weekend stopped for breakfast went to start up ignition came on all lights ok but but nothing not even a click turned ignition on and of three or four times and van started as normal it has done it three more times over the weekend anyone any ideas 1998 fiat ducato 2.5d thanks

As above seem the most likely culprits.

We had a 2004 Ducato 2.8 JTD which started to play up starting and it turned out that there was a missing earth strap between a gearbox bolt and the nearside chassis leg.
Fitted an earth strap and never had the problem again.

To check engine earth; connect multimeter, set on 20v scale, one lead to battery neg and the other lead to good clean aluminum part of engine. Get someone to turn key to start position, if you get a reading above 1 volt then you need to improve either the engine to chassis or battery to chassis earth connections/straps.
