Hi , do you take a copy of your v5 when you travel to France/spain or the original or not bother with any .

Gov.uk say you 'must' take V5 when travelling in Europe.

But what about if it was stolen the scum bags have your logbook/v5 and they could sell it , I did take a copy of it last year when we went to Spain, but thought I would ask as I haven't been to France .

We keep our originals in the lockable compartment in the cab. If it gets nicked from there I‘d suggest you have bigger problems than worrying about someone trying to sell a British van in Europe.

Trouble is GerTee we don't have a lockable compartment in the cab.

In which case a bit of imagination… under the mattress… in a waterproof bag hidden in an outside locker… that’s what I’d do anyway.

I've taken a couple of very good colour photocopies (no originals carried) for more than 40 years driving abroad but I've never been asked to show one.

In France the law states that you must have proof of ownership.

The V5c specifically states that it is not proof of ownership only of the Registered Keeper.

I carry my original Bill of Sale.

Is that in place of the V5 original? Or do you carry both
Thanks

Look on the bright side. here we are supposed to carry the logbook, the ficha tecnica, the insurance document & the receipt for the current years ins payment , & the receipt for the current years road tax along with either the bill of sale or a copy. Also the current itv pass sheet 6 receipt of payment. all in the glove box. copies are now acceptable when in spain , so I am told. But originals have to be carried when outside spain.
It does give me nightmares as if the van is stolen they have all the paperwork but it is of little use to them as it cannot be sold without my id , lots of money for the change of ownershiop etc. What is a problem though is you can't report it stolen to your insurance without the paperwork. You have to apply for a new logbook(permiso) new ficha tecnica & new insurance paperwork. . Then you can claim.

everything has to be carried here. In France many will not work on a vehicle without sight of a registration document. Some places here in spain main dealers would be the same.

Originals and copies carried but each stored in separate places in campervan. Our V5 copy is so good, I have stored the original in a plastic sleeve. Never had to use them, but belt and braces to stop any problems.
