Can somebody please explain to me the meaning of the various weights on a V5 document?
I have:
Revenue weight........................................4100KG GROSS
Maximum permissable mass (exc m/c)....3700
Mass in service.........................................3140
I looked online and there are so many different explanations and different names (MAM, GVW and Revenue weight seem to all be the same thing)

1995 saw major reforms of the vehicle taxation system as a whole. The bulk of the 1995 changes came into operation on 1 July 1995, but some additional changes were introduced on 29 November 1995. The intention was to remove many of the complications in the existing taxation structure, using a strategy to link VED rates for many vehicles directly to the rate for the PLG group, or the basic minimum rate for HGVs. In addition, the Goods Vehicle taxation system was considerably simplified by the abolition of separate goods vehicle classes for farmers and showmen. All remaining light goods vehicle taxation classes were also abolished and vehicles in those groups transferred to the PLG class. At the same time, the basis for calculation of excise duty for goods vehicles was amended to “revenue weight”. Revenue weight means either “confirmed maximum gross weight” as determined by plating and testing regulations, or “design weight” for vehicles not subject to plating and testing (formerly known as Restricted HGVs)

MAM is what the maximum all up weight vehicle is allowed to be on the road .
Mass in service T he Mass in R unning O rder (MIR O ), or kerbweight including a 75kg driver, of a car as it left the factory. It excludes any components added by the dealer. This figure is given in the car's Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C (log book) for newer vehicles.
Dont expect them all to be on V5

Unless I'm mistaken ( often happens )

Revenue weight........................................4100KG GROSS
Train weight vehicle and trailer fully loaded with your lathe and woody bits

Maximum permissable mass (exc m/c)....3700kg
Just the van fully loaded including kitchen sink .

Mass in service.........................................3140
Unladen weight no gin involved
Now the experts will be along to auto correct

Sorry jollyrodger that is incorrect.

Revenue weight & Max permissible mass should be the same.
I assume the van has been uprated as that is a common cock up DVLA make, they alter the Revenue weight but don't bother changing the Mass in service. Happened on my last van took 4 months to get it right.
Mass in service is the MIRO.

You need to get the V5 corrected otherwise you will be limited to 3700 kg.

You mean the maximum permissable mass (MGW) Lenny.
The mass in service (MIRO) is the same even after uprating.

As I said Lenny HB .
often mistaken

On my v5 revenue weight was blank.
After upping it to 3700kg

Vin plate 3100kg /5000kg

three phone calls later it still came back blank .

Finally 3rd attempt they got it right .
Did get told by one at DVLA no matter if overweight
"it's a motorhome"

jollyrodger pappajohn and Lenny HB Thanks very much for your explanations. It is a little clearer now. I guess I have to phone DVLA and ask them nicely to change the Maximum permissible mass

Phoning a waste of time you need to send your V5 with a letter explaining to them what needs doing in words of one syllable.
If you are lucky you will get it back correct within 4 months.

I tried 3 or 4 times over 3 years to get my V5c with the correct weights and each time it was returned with the same figures and a letter telling me they don't change them.

Finally I got fed up and contacted my MP with the details ... within two weeks I received the correct document from DVLA and a couple of days later an apologetic letter along with a £20 cheque for my trouble.

DVLA are collectively idiots.
I used to have a small 1983 Suzuki jeep.
It had a 997cc engine... 0.997ltrs.
It had a kerb weight of 970kg.... 0.97 tonnes
According to DVLA it had a max permissible weight of... 3500kg... 3.5 tonnes.
A payload of..... 2530kg...2.53 tonnes.

To load it to its maximum would have broken its chassis but that's what DVLA had as its max permitted weight.
