This seemed to be a worrying latest trend walking around the site at Lucksall last night . Whilst I understand the temperatures are high I don’t think it’s right to run the engine to cool the habitation area whilst parked up on site . General excuse was the dogs were getting too hot .(this was a small group of people all with dogs and a specific brand of camper van 😆🤭🤓) With a river right on the site wouldn’t the dogs have preferred a swim ?
Just seems wrong to me . However I do understand it’s hard to keep a dog cool in these extremely hot temperatures.

But why not just tow a massive Genny to power a huge air con setup and really annoy all the other campers?
Well I assumed they would adhere to sensible times and consider the neighbors, but then again they are motorhomers so now not sure if it’s all about ME!

I'm surprised the wardens didn't tell them to turn it off , I wouldn't be happy with diesel engines running all day at all

There's no excuse for this at all. My dog won't go near water but I always have a cool mat and a cooling bandana for her, as well as a 12v fan to keep her cool. If it's hot during the day, she sits outside with us under the van. At night, we have the windows and roof vents open to rotate the air, as well as having the fan on. Plus she sleeps on the cool mat. No one needs to use air con to keep dogs cool. The cooling mats are great for humans, too!! :)

Are they also poisoning the dogs? In still summer air the exhaust fumes are less likely to disperse leaving them to pool around the motorhome, perhaps they are being sucked inside by the air con. Just a thought.

Why are dogs in a HOT van, and not in the shade of an awning etc...or the van sides come to think of it....some folk...
It’s actually about 10 degrees cooler in the van than under our awning this morning. The van insulation can be used to our advantage if you don’t let too much sun in, in the first place. Our dog (he’s nuts) will lie in the sun and swelter unless we make that impossible.

A word of caution regarding cooling mats. They are extremely slippery if on a hard floor. I walked on ours and ended up in the air landed on my back. Was traumatised if i had landed on my dog I would of killed him.

Being a retired Engineer I have often thought about the feasibility of powering the AC compressor on the engine with a 240v motor when onsite. It could be done by having 2 of the electromagnetic clutch's drive by belts off the engine and motor.

Sounds like you need a project to help humanity (and Motorhomers) ... ;)

The air-conditioning on my car (hybrid) is electric and working well. Obviously it would not be practical to run it from the engine as that only runs less than 50% of the time. Something similar on 12v could work well on a motorhome.

I've seen ones that have a shiny coating but the Pecute one I have has a woven matt kind of material. It also has a firm gel inside, unlike the fluid gel that some others have. I've just put mine on our tiled floor and tried to push it along with my foot. It did move but nowhere near enough that I might have fallen over with it. Thanks for the heads up, though! :)

Tried the cool mats but our two refused to lie on them. Meg stays cool when pitched by lying under the van and Spice doesn't keep cool at all, prefers to lie in the sun and roast. On the road there is air con plus maxxfan plus a couple of small fans that can be pressed into use. We also have a 12" mains fan that can run from inverter and produces quite a gale.

I think these people fall into the band of ignorant, anti social, selfish goons who give motorhomers a bad name. There is no excuse for this behaviour. Having just spent 5 weeks on 2 largish southern French sites with >32°C if this had happened they would have been advised to foxtrot Oscar... unbelievable.

What is it about dogs being too warm. Never known a dog to suffer from heat exhaustion unless a human has locked it in a sealed car.
They have their own in built cooling system in the form of their panting
What about all the cattle and pigs, do they need air con too?
