im a not so newbie
I read on here a recommendation for a good quality 12v usb outlet.

I can’t find it for the life of me now.

Any suggestions for one.
I’d be happy with a surface mounted one.

I recently bought and fitted two of these in the van. They state they are quick charge and they certainly are. Used one to replace one of the ciggy lighter outlets in the cab and the other in the hab area.
Their from Amazon, so if you are using an ad blocker you will need disable it to view. (y)

Amazon product ASIN B07DGNQNLR

I’ve now fitted two of these , all good and only £5 delivered

I am looking for USB outlets which use a switching regulator to convert from the van battery 12 volts to the USB 5 volts.

If the USB outlet uses a simple linear regulator then for every amp at 5 volts there will be 7 volts dumped as heat which is 35 watts per amp wasted.

Switching regulators don't waste heat as part of the conversion process and are much more efficient.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to find out what conversion method is used even when the device is one of the more expensive ones.

I have a Ring double usb , panel mount. It’s quite chunky at the back and I suspect it has a switching regulator. My bmv battery monitor can register down to 50ma. When I plug the phone in, it takes 15-5w of power, hence my suspicion.
The cheap and cheerful ones are simple choppers as you mentioned, wasting a lot of voltage, instead of converting it into power.

I wouldn't have thought any of them will be linear regulators, they would have to have big aluminium fins sticking out of them to dissipate the heat. I made one once with the LM??? Chip, so I know ?

A good cigar type plug in make is the Scosche Revolt twin usb. I don't like the perminant wired in Chinese sockets, they use power continuously and have inferior components. Plus if the cigar type adapter fails, you can simply bin it and plug another one in ?

That’s why I used the one I pictured above , it has a switch built in , I only turn it on while I’m using it , saving as much power as possible

Just a Note, Some will not charge I-Phones!. or any apple devices.
