does anyone know of a UK manufacturer of upright (vertical) kayak racks to fit on the rear of motorhomes? Im aware there are a couple in USA (one being RV kayaks) although the shipping is extortionate

I donā€™t know of one, though the Fiamma ones can be used if you are thoughtful.

They are longer than you think, even a white water kayak is 8feet so need some thought.

Me too! Been a few years since I have tackled a grade 5 mind. šŸ˜‚

I think I could use straps to put mine upright on the cycle rack but havenā€™t tried it yet.

A sea kayaking mate swears by custom made roof racks by Towtal. If you can spare the weight a tow ball rack might be a winner though I have no idea where from.

Converted caravanner!
Iā€™m desperate for a solution for a couple of short day Kayaks After being told there was not Enough space on the roof for one.
Iā€˜m sure thereā€™s a way.

I tried my short freestyle boat across the back on the cycle rack. It stuck out a few inches either side and I wasnā€™t happy with the swing so abandoned the idea.

I gave up in the end and got a blow up SUP.

Much easier but not as exciting.

How heavy is the kayak and proposed rack though? American RVs can carry a lot more on the back than a euro van

The upright kayak racks are quite heavy i believe. rear end weight could be an issue together with a tower although probs no heavier than a rear end motorbike rack together with motorbike

If you have a tow bar then any decent metal fabricator would be able to build you something to suit
I take it you cant fit them on roof of toad?

I adapted a FIamma ladder to carry my waveski vertically on the offside rear door of my PVC. The ski is 7ā€™6ā€ long and is similar to a small kayak weighs about 12kg in its bag. It worked very well, but it was a bit of a wrestle to get it in position on my own.

andy63 Andy have you got a vertical kayak rack on yours?
No Grant ..mine is the karaitek high lift roof rack..
I did see the thread but have no experience of the rear vertical racks..
My yak is just to big for that anyway and other than watching the projection over the roof and your head clearance it would be equally important to watch the lower projection on the rear mount carriers..with a decent overhang and ferry ramps you could destroy a kayak in a blink..
Andy.

So whoā€™s gonna buy a BacRak first? I need a tow ball first, then a bit of measuring up.
Iā€™m interested to see if you need a further brace to prevent movement from wind resistance? will drop them a line.

I emailed them this morning to see if they have a single version, the one on their website shows a double. If they do I will order.

On and off for many years.
Inflatable kayak?
Yes, that is our solution but so far only one of the boats has been in the water.

It just got too much hassle and stress to lift even the day boats on and off the motorhome.

To update, I have been in contact with the company, they are moving premises and asked if I needed one immediately, he was relieved when I said the ew year would do. Have arranged for him to contact in the new year when he is ready and will order one.

I reckon you may need some form of support at the top, easy enough to fix something to the van that in turn can be attached to the top of those racks which look very nice !!!

Hi Richard
Only round the village when I first fitted it. Due out with it mid April, will let you know. It felt sturdy when on.

How does it attach at the top of the rack? Do you have any side on photos? Iā€™m trying to figure out how I could attach it to the back of my auto trail, which has no window or door, just an expanse of fibreglass
