depends on what chassis your van is on, and what limits that has before you have to start adding extras like bigger wheels, air suspension etc

Can someone advise me on what we need to do to up grade our MH to 4 or 4.5 tonne?

Contact SV Tech and fill in the form on the attached link, pick the one that applies to your van
SV Tech will then reply telling you if its possible and what if anything needs to be done to the van to comply.

Have a look at your Alko tag in front of the rear axle.
Example see my axle is capable of 2400kg regardless of plating
I imagine yours is much lower but will give an idea

since 2007, 25 years tuggin before that.
If it's not on 16" wheels then 3800kg is about as far as you can go.
Mine is on a Fiat chassis(i.e. not Alko) & I am just upping it from 4000kg to 4500kg.
Needed Air assistance on rear suspension & optional rear tyre upgrade to 225 75 16 (221 rated)
to increase rear axle to 2600kg from 2400kg.(front axle 2100kg).

I have looked into this Mike and it seems that you must contact your MH manufacturer (Rapido!!) and ask them to supply you with a COC with the uprated weight, should be ok with the ALKO chassis, once you have this it's a case of visiting your Prefecture armed with your Grey card, proof of address, inside leg measurement etc etc, (you know what the french are like for paperwork) and you should walk away with an updated Grey card with uprated weight.
Works in theory. If all fails a visit to the local Drire/Dreal is your next option.

Good luck.
Steve

There are a number of different weights of alko and if it's not a heavy chassis like mine which are usually a special order there is no way to overcome that.
As said the wheel size is a very big clue

I don't know what weight of alko chassis Mike has on his van or what size wheels, I was just giving him information on upgrading his MH in France.
I also forgot to add Mike that if you are successful in upgrading then you will need a CT (mot) every year in stead of 2 yearly you will also need a medical after your 60th birthday.

Hey, ho,
Thanks for all the info, but after due consideration, I think I'll leave it as it is.
If I upgrade it will only encourage me to carry even more stuff that I don't really need. LOL:)
