I posted this thread some months ago, concerning the mattress which collapsed before it was 6 months old on my Autotrail Tribute 670 pvc. Since they claimed it was now out of guranatee, Autotrail suggested I contacted the dealer and ask them to organise a "goodwill claim". This I did, but have not heard anything from the dealer in 4 months. The reason I had not made a claim before was that I was not convinced that any new replacement would be an improvement, and when I did finally start the claim procedure, the dealer did confirm that it would be on a like-for-like basis. In other for words, replace the mattress with the same quality.
There was a noticeable lack of enthusiasm on the part of the dealer, and the timetable could not be confirmed. Since I didn't want to be uncomfortable for the upcoming prime camping period, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I contacted my nearest foam specialist, The Foam Shop in Taunton. I had previous experience of them, and was not keen on the person I dealt had previously dealt with, but at the same time, I wanted to see and feel the goods. I had had some cheaper quotes with foam specialists in the midlands, but preferred to deal locally so I could check the quality I spoke with different person there, Tony, who was really great, very helpful, interested and pleasant to deal with. Since we were shortly to go abroad, between us we managed to organise a suitable timetable, which they thankfully stuck to. In a couple of weeks we had the suggested foam cut to size and bonded, since it was a composite of high density base and memory foam topper. They also supplied the suitable Dacron topper and spray glue for us to stuff into the original mattress covers, which were fine. We did this final fitting ourselves, since we were on a very tight schedule, we were going abroad within a couple of days.
It worked a treat, we're so pleased with the final result, so much better than that originally fitted by Autotrail. Total cost was just over £100. When you think of the total cost of the van when new, and the very low quality of the mattress foam, it's just like spoiling a ship (campervan) for a ha'penny worth of tar.
